Can any of you knowledgable types out there tell me when the serp. engine was first used in the griff and how can you tell by just lifting the bonnet.
I'm about to look at high mileage car and it would be nice to get a clue as to what lump is in it.

Thanks all

Preserpentine engine uses a single V section drive belt for the alternator etc, serpentine uses a poly-V belt (wide flat belt with lots of little ribs).

actually serveral v belts on the pre-serp depending on spec, with one long toothed belt that runs all round the front on the serp. serp looks smaller, enclosed from the front.

also black rocker covers on the pre-serp, purple for serp. these could have been changed, but its VERY rare.

Approx August 1994 - Serpentine engine came out.

If anything different then the car may have been dealer stock unregistered.

Our Black October 1994 Griff has the later Serpentine engine.

Tis more common than you think... based on the number of V8 engines that I've seen pass through Tower View... People like purple bling more than black bling.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but don't all serps have a separate header and swirl pot whereas the pre-serps all have just the one? (bible is at home so can't recall) That should make at-a-glance identification a piece of cake.

If there's a tank in front of the exhaust manifolds near the radiator with a blue pressure cap, and there's another tank near the top with a big brass screw, it's a serp: -

If on the other hand there's just the tank near the top with a blue cap, it's a pre-serp: -

At a glance identification is already a piece of cake. If it has a poly-V ancilliary belt (aka the 'serpentine belt') it is a serpentine engine. If it has one (or more ) single-V belts it is preserpentine.

As pete say, look for the polyvee belt. All other things can be changed/modified.

throwing spanner in...

here's my pre-serp, with black rockers, several ( ) V belts with a V section AND the blue cap AND seperate swirl pot, as opposed to one flat poly V bely with several small vvvv's in it.

mines a late '94 with T5 box. one of the latest cross-over cars.

Hey Andy

I meant to ask again, what spring rates you running on your Nitrons?

128db - how do you get that down for most trackdays, especially goodwood etc?

Ally rad, where from and how much.

Ta very much.

Ps keep me updated with the new lump! are you booked into snetterton?

Tuscan engine!!!

are you MAD!

Oh go on then (its in for it as we speak)

spring rates are standard Nitron (can't remember what that is, higher rattles the fillings out when touring and std's can be quite quick enough, to hard causes tyre wear and a new set up!)

as for noise / Goodwood...forget it! I use two sets of silencers at once, one in pipes and one over the end and i can get down to 103db if the marshall's friendly...to loud for Goodwood, Castle Coombe and many others. In fact i'm having a new silencer fitted for this reason...track use.

Ally rad + cowls from Peninsula-TVR around £350, and i've never seen better ally welding (a work of art!)

not going to Snetterton as cars in for lump
(anyway - Spa's closer!!! isn't snetterton in Sweden? )

see you later you old DRAG queen
