Last year, had the flu, went rule 5 = and crashed the bike into a bus stop kerb due to inability to concentrate.

Last night, knew the bike needed some setup changed as seat was too far back and high, but heavy rain was coming, so went rule 5 and blasted home as fast I could and still got caught in the rain = 2 nice red raw chafing spots.

What have you done stupidly when invoking rule 5

Recently (last week in fact) I rode 105.7 miles through poor weather and a catalogue of disasters. I left the house at 11:45am on Tuesday and finally (walked) up my drive at 3:04am on Wednesday morning, 15 hours 19 minutes after I left.

It was 'emotional' to say the least, and testing both mentally and physically. Given the ability to change things, I'd have carried a map, and would have headed for a station on the line home and caught a bloody train after the gears packed in. As it was I'd persevered too long and timed myself out of the option to catch a train so I had no real choice other than to get home under my own steam in the end.

(I still didn't need any of that "botty butter for batty boys" though! wink )

Surely if you are questioning rule 5, then go to rule 5 (ad nauseum).

But seriously, as per above posters, sod the rules, do what you want.

The rules are just a bit tongue in cheek. Take them as this.

My Strava routes are recorded on a Garmin Edge 500, so only the 'breadcrumb' trail option. Great if you're needing to follow a route you've already downloaded into the unit, but no use at all for mid-ride changes of plan or when you've a dire need to get to a town at night when all the local road signs deal only in the next village or two. Lack of a paper map has me relying on my geographical knowledge alone, as even if I had access to internet 'hotspots' or whatever the heck they are, my basic Nokia C1 wouldn't be of any use to me in taking advantage of them.

On that particular ride I was initially (and fairly loosely) following a breadcrumb trail, but when things went wrong I shut it off and tried to head 'east/southeast' which was correct. But in the dark I was desperately concentrating on the road surface and ended up wandering off to the north/northeast instead. Partly through inattention, and partly because that was the way the roads ended up pointing.

I'm never really lost in the 'completely lost' sense, but the detail of the rural roads is where my on-board hard drive usually lets me down.

All was good in the end. I got home, and I HAD to ride it all really, else my personal challenge for this year would have fallen flat on it's face before I'd got half way through it. (The challenge is "ride at least 1 x 100 mile ride per calendar month for the whole of 2016", btw, and this was my one chance to complete June's century.)

It's not a good idea breaking Frank Strack's rules, he has many disciples all over the world looking out for rule breakers and once caught the punishment is severe

Would love to have a pop at this, but it's dangerously close to my lovely wife's birthday. She's already sorted her own present, yet again (signed copies of books by Dan Jones and Suzannah Lipscomb), so I'm pretty much going to have to make some form of an effort to celebrate the day with her. I'm not entirely ruling it out, but the odds of making it are pretty long right now, I think.

Yes, you will be forced onto a bike as ill-fitting as the master's. hehe
