I am off to Kempton Park Racecourse tomorrow for the Irish night.

Included in the package are some vouchers for food and drink, as well as some "Totepool" betting vouchers.

Not being a gambling man I have no idea what to do with this. I have £20 worth to fritter away.

So.. Tips, tricks and insider knowledge on who to "spunk my wad on" below.

As a complete novice with no clue on form etc, I use the following procedure to enjoy a little flutter and excitement without losing my shirt:
Bet £10 on the second favourite to win, on each race. Therefore the max you'll lose is £70-£80 over an evening.
The odds on the favourite always seem really thin, and I often find they don't win.
In the past, with a couple of wins I got my stake back and enough left over to pay for a few beers.
I just looked at it as a free night out. Could have just as easily cost £100 or so.

So... just betting the <NAME> horse to come 2nd?

What about those verable bets that span over many races?

No, bet on the 2nd favourite to win. i.e. the horse with the 2nd best odds.

The first horse I ever bet on did not finish the race, I don't think I will see that £2 ever again.

With that in mind, I don't think I am qualified to help, sorry! - well, apart from not to expect too much from a horse with 50 to 1 odds.

I have heard this advice before from experienced gamblers, makes sense.

The other hint is to look for the jockey with the lightest weight if the ground is soft or the trainer who has sent is horse the greatest distance.

The only thing I bet on is myself on playing pool, so just passing on the crap I have heard over the years but it seems to make sense.

I usually just choose based on the funniest names, it's amusing but doesn't work.

Is it not possible to exchange the betting vouchers for beer? Or chicken in a basket? Or both? Might be a better evening.

Have a look at the pre race odds here:

http://www.oddschecker.com/horse-racing/kempton

On each race is a write up on the horses and expected odds.

Was hoping some one could do the work for me. I'm taking the freshly rebuilt TVR there tonight... Isn't that a gamble enough?

I'd be going for Pick A Little in the 5.45pm. Good odds, seems like it has a very decent chance.

I'd go with these

5.45 - CAPOLAVORO
6.15 - BAHAMIAN BOY
6.45 - Zain Emperor
7.15 - BLUE SUEDE
7.45 - SECURE CLOUD (EACH WAY)
8.15 - DOLPHIN VILLAGE
8.45 - LIGHTNING CHARLIE

Just for fun like.

Good luck
