Can anyone recommend such a camera for under £500. Not looking for anything to fancy.
One option is Nikon Coolpix 7900 with Nikon's underwater protective case which would be c£400 all in

I have had several experiences

You can go for an £8 disposable. Don't knock it!

I have a (relatively) cheap option of a plastic housing that will take any small size compact camera.

It does the job but - well it's a bit of a fiddle.

A dedicated housing is a lot easier to use.

Mrs Beano, being a big Sony fan, spotted Sony's answer and we went for a DSC T1 and a dedicated housing. Let's you use almost EVERY button. Unlike some.

My favourite photo from the Sony

There is a special underwater housing for the Canon A70 (compact digital) which I think is a really good camera for the money (my rather crappy shots at www.dange.co.uk were taken with it... I'll post one of my favourate here though).

I have an Olympus 3 megapixel camera with their underwater housing and it works just fine. A few examples:

This is really just point and shoot stuff and I have only just started at underwater photography. I must also admit to having an external strobe which really helps. I would recommend you take a look at www.camerasunderwater.co.uk , they have the Olympus u410 with housing for £325.

Thanks for that link...some interesting equipment there...like your pix too.
With £75 difference between the Olympus package and the Nikon one I was thinking about (above) there is also a difference between 4 and 7 megapixels respectively(approx)

Yeah, I think that I will stick with the compact for underwater stuff. I'd rather lose that if the housing floods than my D70 if the Ikelite were to.

I wonder if you're heading for the Mp trap? I have the Olympus Mju 300 (3.2Mp) and some of the pix it took are currently in my exhibition. Shove 7Mp into the same space and sensitivity has to take a dive, no? In the low light situations underwater, that might be worth considering...?

Yeah - me and Webshots clearly don't agree it's either red crosses (except GetCarter seems to see them ) or protected!
