It's a 2001 1.6 petrol with good history. The temp gauge went up to 120 after it had idled for 5 minutes then driven briskly for 3 minutes. I slowed to 60 mph and the temp came back to 90 and steady. I then went a bit quicker and the temp rose to 110 then back to 90 when I slowed to 65. The heater now blows cold air and the temp stays at 90 as long as speed kept about 65.
Replaced the thermostat which made no difference, ran it with rad flush no difference, flushed the heater matrix with proper hose connection no difference. The bottom rad hose is warm, all the other hoses are hot apart from the 2 heater hoses which remain cold. Squeezing all the hoses disturbs the water level in the reservoir to some extent. Left it ticking over with the cap off to try and bleed the system and on 6" ramps to raise the front whilst massaging the hoses without success .
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Perhaps the water pump has failed, it may have the common vag impeller problem.

Yes I would change the water pump if it's not been done already.
It's due with the cambelt but is not usually done on older cars unless specified.
