Anybody got any recommendations?

Was considering submitting some shots for consideration but need to re-size (up-size) TIFF files considerably.

Recommended option of the agency is Genuine Fractals, however this is a plug in for PS 7.0 or CS. Otherwise GF looks just the job!

I am still on steam-powered PS 6.0.1 and didn't necessarily want to budget for the upgrade just yet. Or at least I need to earn some dosh, before I can justify too much more photo-expenditure!

So are there any alternatives to GF??

That looks interesting.

I can't see, from the website, how it deals with increasing sizes. Not really keen to download and install it until I have a clue how it's going to work. Any ideas?

Try upsizing in 10% steps in PS. It can be surprisingly effective. Fred Miranda has an action based on this technique here. Qimage, while a printing utility also does a good job, see here

Beanno...are you sure your agency requires the images in TIFF format?

Are you doing anything else to it? Even a 16.7 MP RAW file from my 1Ds II only produces a 95MB 16 bit TIFF file!

And for me, starting with a humble 6.1Mp, a NEF is 5-6Mb and the resulting TIFF about 35Mb...

Sorry chaps for misleading you....went back to look at the test image.....it wasn't one I had saved direct from the card, it was one i had a play with and for some reason had maintained the file size but I had taken the image size up to 30x20...sorry!
Standard straight from the card 19.7Mb and saved as TIFF goes to 69.8Mb 16 bit.
So reverse the question now....how did you get up to 95Mb?

Yup - 8-bit TIFF: 48Mb minimum. It looks a tall order doesn't it!?

Thanks for your ideas. I'll have a look at how a stepped PS works. (Dammit, the guy on the Adobe Seminar at FoI was explaining this and I didn't get his recommendation!!!)

I see you've re-visited this one!

Which is about where my test file came to. I thought, OK so I am 75% of the way there, and admittedly using TIFF won't see the sort of degredation in a JPEG, but I think it probably needs doing properly!

That's a very kind offer, but (when I work out what's what) I am talking about 10-15 images and if all goes well plenty more! And I can try the process in 6.0.1 and see how I get on first.

But then I've just read the blurb on Fred Miranda and the "Stair Interpolation" plug-in. I think this is exactly what I need srider!

As a slight aside: I am revelling in the fact that with digital images through to the final goods I can do all this myself. I just had a batch of films come back from a half decent processor and you should see the colour cast where they've scanned them! Red phone boxes somewhere between pink and magenta! It's issues like this that have stopped me in the past!

Turning to Qimage. That looks great for the printing process. But again I cannot see that it does what the "Fractals" program does in terms of up-sizing.

Think I'll consider upgrading to CS at some point anyway.

Beano, have you tried simply increasing image size in PS6? Does it go yukky? If you're at 35Mp and just need to get it to 40Mp, you won't need to increase it very much from its current 3008 pixels wide.

Just a thought; might save you some aggro.

The GF plugin trial works in PSP...
GF trial is 10 uses...
PSP has a 60 day trial...

At least it'll give you an idea of functionality before purchasing.

I didn't do anything - this is the size of the file straight out the camera according to PS.

It's simple to work out the size of a TIFF file - it's basically 1 byte per pixel per colour for an 8 bit image, or 2 bytes per pixesl for a 16 bit image. E.g., an 8MP file will produce an 8 bit TIFF file that is 8 x 3 = 24 MB in size.

One of the mags did a test comparing PS and GF not long ago, and they concluded that the built in resizing tool in PS was the best option for most situations, and GF only beat it once you started doing very large increases (> 400%), so it's probably worth sticking with PS and see how it looks.

Ah - just the sort of useful information I'm hoping for! The preference at the mo, is to do some tests in PS6, then have a look at the SIPro as the cost/claims ratio looks promising. Then as a last resort we'll just have to upgrade PS!!!

Well chaps would be delighted to however haven't worked out how to get images up here yet and have just been a*sing about since i got it.
I was supposed to be in St martin in the Caribbean from last Thursday however got struck down by a nasty bug just hours before catching the flight...have been signed off for a week
However am busy rescheduling some work so it is going to be Antigua in April and Tobago May and not bothering coming back in between
What I will do is post back to back shots from the D2H and the D2X once i work out how to get them on here. I was taking pix of vehicle tax discs 200 yards away yesterday.....sad!
