So, I've always been a Mercedes guy, and currently driving the 2013 CLS.
It's been good, but I've always hankered after a Porsche, and after umming and aaahing decided that I might go for a Macan Diesel S.
Now, I've saved up for a deposit by working overtime every weekend for the last year and have a hefty amount.

I was on a finance deal with Mercedes, and when I went to hand my car back, they heard about my dalliance with Porsche, and we're offering a really sweet deal on the new E-Class. Aggressive dealer contribution towards the deposit and really low monthly payments, with a purchase option of 19K after 3 years.

This had me tempted, I can't lie. The E class is loaded with goods, and the 350 engine or whatever it was, had quite a lot of bite. And it comfortably did the miles I need to do to for work.

What would you all suggest?

Are the Porsche GFVs a good deal? Perhaps if I can buy the Macan at the end of 3 years as I've seen they hold their value well it will fall cheaper over the long run vs the Mercedes? I really don't have any experience with this at all, and Mercedes are making it really easy to just hand this CLS back and swap it over, even covering the excess mileage charge of 1.5K.

Thanks in advance!

If you stay with Merc. you'll still have a hankering for a Porsche :-)

Only way to know is walk into your local OPC, tell them your story, test drive a Macan (and Cayenne and maybe Panamera) and see what they can do.

Other than an S Class Coupe (and even then I would have to think about it) I don't think there is a single Merc I would take over a Porsche. Merc can make their finance deals look attractive, but the "enhanced residuals" come back to bite the owner on the arse - my other half bought a used SLK for £23k with £5k in 18 months ago and is still in negative equity. Macan's are holding up value wise incredibly well, I would get the Macan and if for some reason you did have any regrets (which I am sure you wouldn't) you wouldn't lose a load of money getting back out of it as they are in demand. The flip side is if you bought the E Class and then wanted the Macan you'd find it a bit more difficult I would assume (the E Class will lose a lot!)

Out of interest, any reason for a Macan specifically as opposed to a similarly priced Cayman, Cayenne, Panamera etc?

CLS v Macan.... scratchchin

The Macan is an SUV so the Porsche feel is going to be limited with a third of it being pure Audi Q5 ... Cayman or boxster are so much better.

Turn over the Merc for a new slightly cheaper one and use the saved deposit for s/h weekend Porsche?

I'd take my E63 AMG over both my ex-911 Carrera and Carrera 4 anyday.

Porsche. Every single day of the week. I've had two mercs - only for mile munching. My god they are dull. I've tried a few different AMGs - still not impressed.

Do some decent test drives then make up your mind!

Porsche. There is no doubt. It will make you feel happy every time you get in it.

Based on my porsche experience so far, keep the merc and blow the lot on coke and hookers...

Like driving it but boy do I hate owning it.

PCP then? For the Porsche I mean biggrin

The Macan SUV desel is wrong car to get the Porsche experience - more I've got a Cayman/911/coxster and now would like one on stilts that takes four in comfort and better economy.

Very popular and iirc has 12 month waiting list for a new one, but there are better SUVs for the optioned up price.

Sounds to me like you're hankering for a diesel SUV, not a Porsche. smile

Wow, thanks for the messages, for some reason I didn't get any notifications of replies and assumed everyone just ignored me!

This is my logic (flawed):

If I get a C cabrio, it's just come out and may hold value in three years as kinda niche. Plus I can get it fully loaded for quite a nice finance deal, and hand the car back as I change every three years anyway. Also, I've gone about 15K miles over my agreed limit with the Merc and was hoping they give me a sweet deal and knock some money off for going over if I stay with them...

BUT the Macan is a nice car (though not as nice as I thought but better than my Merc) when I test drove it.

The C class interior does feel a bit cheap, and it's great for driving in a straight line, but not as engaging as the Macan.

I commute 40 miles a day for work, and drive 150 miles a weekend to see my parents almost every weekend.

I was thinking of just getting a two year old used Macan, but they are still pretty expensive! I would make up the 15K shortfall in my deposit with a cheap 30 month loan.

Please flame me cos I know my thinking must be awry.

Hmm, Cayman can't carry my mom and dad, and I want to carry them about a bit (as they're getting old!). Cayenne I do love, but I think a new one is coming out next year, and the prices of these will plummet, even if I bought a used one. The Panamera kinda the same logic.. Plus I think the rear is so ugly!

What do you think of the new C coupe?

Why do you hate owning it? Are the OPCs a bit naff?

You can have a new CLS sooner than a new Macan and it will cost less to buy. wink

That said, I've had various Mercs (C, CLK Coupe, CLK Cab, E class saloon and E class coupe) and they were all good cars but now I've got the Cayenne diesel, it would require a very special Merc to get me to go back. The Cayenne is big but it handles well and 37 mpg on a run is very good (close to what I got in my E350 Coupe). The only thing that would get me to part with the Cayenne now is a Panamera. Don't let the 'not a proper Porsche' bks put you off - compared to any other SUV or 4WD estate, nothing comes close.

The Macan Diesel S is a sweet handling SUV (small SUV) - it has a very trick drivetrain and apportions most of the torque to the rear wheels most of the time - when accelerating out of a bend you can feel this perfectly as it feels rear wheel drive. In terms of being fun to drive, I would think it would be better than an E Class - I have only driven the last gen E class and the Macan is miles better - but can't compare to the latest shape. However the Macan is built as a drivers car. The engine is very far back in the engine bay - behind the front axle - that makes it more mid engined than front. Check out the difference between it location of a Cayenne engine. The Macan was also surprisingly economical for a 3 litre.

In terms of residual value the Macan will cream any E class over 3 years too.

Also the PDK box in the Macan is very good - but I would get a fruitier exhaust to complete the sportier feel of the Macan.

I totally agree with you tbh. The "not a proper Porsche" line put me off the first time, and although I've enjoyed my Merc, it does feel as though I've wasted £25K on a new Merc, when I could have spent that money and a bit of financial planning and put that into a Porsche.

Given that a new Cayenne is out next year, are you going to hold onto your Cayenne, or sell it beforehand? And if you don't mind me asking, how much do you think it will go for?
