ive a d5300 and a jessops dedicated external/hot shoe flash with TTL, Zoom, etc but sometimes the camera fash pops up with the Jessops mounted on the camera and sometimes it overexposes the image...

any thoughts?

Can you borrow a Nikon flash? Should help you work out if it's the camera or the flash

On my Nikon (not a 5300), I can change a setting to turn auto flash off which stops the built in flash popping up. If you are shooting in auto mode, there might be a mode dial position to do this as well.

I'm surprised that having an external flash attached doesn't inhibit this though.

My guess is you're shooting on Auto and the camera doesn't fully recognise the flash. So either take it off Auto (P for Program is the closest) or as suggested get a Nikon flashgun.
