Just wondered if anyone has experianced any problems with the cluthes on the 2004 R1. i've been out and started mine today and when i engaged first the bike shot forward and stalled. Started it up and the same again, i left it running for a while and the problem seemed to vanish. I then cleaned the bike, started it up and the same again! It's only covered 500 miles and seemed fine when i put it away ..... Last October!!. Have heard rumours that they have suffered problems with the clutch on the later models. Anyone had the same issue and if so whats the cure??

I think they have a problem until you go for the first service and they put some different oil in the clutch & adjust it?????? Not too sure of my facts but seem to remember a mate with a '04 R1 telling me this. Seems like the clutch is sticking until fully warmed up or the plates have stuck as it has been standing..... Anyone else have any ideas?

Start it in gear with the clutch in? might just be frozen up with lack of use, don't shag the box too by slamming it into gear!

Good god, my old Triumph used to do this every night

Just put her in second, pull in the clutch and rock backwards to free the plates before you start her. Chances are it's just the oil thickening slightly in the cold weather.

This is a common problem with some of the earlier bikes. Some nip at the factory put grease on the release bearing and it spins out onto the clutch plates and makes them stick together, your Yamaha dealer should already know about this.

To rectify it's just a case of taking the clutch basket out and cleaning the plates with brake cleaner to get the grease off.
