Transporter engine sizes

Me and SWMBO are looking at getting a T5 to use as our day to day transport and holiday adventure wagon with insulation and a rock n roll bed. (seems a better use of money than weddings which the women in my office were confused about!)
We have a budget of £9k for the van and then the work on top of that. We're trying to find opinions on engines, originally I said 2.5 for the 6 speed box for the motorway cruising part of our adventures, however reading other forums they're saying the 1.9 (100bhp) version is better around town which is where I work, and I my brain at least the sort of speeds we'll be doing when we get to Scotland/Dartmoor/Pyranees.
What say you oh Pistonhead VW gurus?
