Rattling clutch in 2013 Audi A5
Discussion
I have a 2013 Audi A5 2.0tdi and noticed this morning that when the car is idle, if you engage the clutch a horrible rattling sound starts coming from the engine - it seems to disappear when you increase the revs or disengage the clutch. Any ideas what this might be? Guess I should get it booked in to be looked at but any prior understanding of what it could be would be good...thanks!
It's only done 32k - to be honest I only noticed it this morning when parking at work so not had a chance to really test it out, but it seems to me that is only when sitting at idle and pressing the clutch. It doesn't rattle otherwise - Might take it for a spin at lunchtime to check it out further - the car drives fine and clutch doesn't appear to be slipping...
Not sure if related but i've got a 2014 A5 TDI and the clutch feels like its slipping if you pull away a bit sharpish, its done this since new, getting worse now its on 50k.
Not sure if there is something mechanical that makes them slip to stop wear?? Never had it in any of my cars before

Just been into Audi and had their master technician take a look - he reckons it feels like the release bearing but won't know for sure until they take the gearbox out - so best case scenario is £800 (may as well replace clutch while it's all out), or £1900 if the DMF / clutch / release bearing need replacing. Fingers crossed for the best case

I had an S4 (3.0 V6) with a manual gearbox. I had the gearbox replaced after a release bearing failed. Luckily it was covered under warranty. The gearbox needed replacing because they checked the oil and found metal shavings in it.

These were some of the symptoms that lead me to reporting the problem to Audi:
- The noise at tick over was more noticeable in the cabin.
- Opening the bonnet, the noise was faintly heard from the rear of the engine bay.
- It sounded like marbles being rubbed together.
- The frequency of the noise didn't increase noticeably as the engine revs increased.
- The noise was more noticeable at startup from cold which made it difficult for Audi to diagnose after driving the car to them.
- Over the period of about 8 weeks, it got slowly worse and more noticeable.
