Any Cyprus Experiences?

I know - Monday morning in grey old blighty for most of us.....

Thinking of a week there, this Spring. Mrs Beano's been a few times and knows a bit of what's what although not for a few years and things can change as well as some new hotels going up and some refurbishments.

I've never been.

Looking, probably, at the mid priced hotel deals (or maybe self-catering) either just off the beaten track or with minimal intrusion of small-noisy-people. And anything to definitely give a miss to - don't want a miserable week!

Any recent experince or links to half-decent reviews appreciated.

We stayed in Protarus. Spot on around there. A hotel called the Vrissiana is well worth a look.

Not much to do in Larnaca...

I hear the other end of the island is much nicer as mentioned above (Paphos)

I was born there, so I'm a little bit biased, but we use Cyplon to book with. www.cyprus-holidays.co.uk/. We usually stay with Cyprus Villages. A little cottage in one of the little villages - hire car included in the cost, plus scheduled flights. Nice and quiet. For a quiet beach - try Lady's Mile on the Akrotiri peninsula. Very few tourists use it. Big plus, you're close to the runway at Akrotiri RAF base so you can lie in the water and watch the boys playing in their planes!

Saturday evening in Limassol - drive up and down the seafront watching the Cypriot boy-racers in their modded machines - great fun!

The East is generally more lively and clubby if that's your thing but if you like it quiet there are lots of small towns and villages in the West. We stayed at Polis and Latchi last year and it was delightful.

My favourite time was driving around the Troudos Mountains on the route of the rally championship which had taken place a few weeks before we were there.

We also went up Mount Kikos and I have never seen such enormous hail stones, I thought they were going to dent the car!

Incidentally, we hired in Latchi a brand new Renault RX4 and it was fab (for what we wanted) and we haggled them down to the price of a Polo, result!

Dear god no! - stayed in a 5 star, hotel lovely but:
no beaches

and the town evolves around 2 for 1 drinking sessions, its like blackpool with sun
all night involves chav boys in neon lit mitscoobhondas wheel spinning and banging stereos.

if you dont want cheap tat, then the three russian run strip clubs are your alternative if you prefer £200 a cola.

low spec cheap style restaurants, except in price

Im never going back.

I travelled around nearly the entire southern side, and it didn't get better. Going to nicosia just made me angry at the injustice of Turkey Vs Cypriots. How can turkey get EEC membership with Greece, when here; they're pointing guns at each other all day?

Paphos...Hmmm

Paphos COULD be nice, just turning very slowly but very surely into Benidorm Part II.

I'd recommend though, you soon learn where to steer clear of!

Injustice from which point of view , North or South? I travel to the North on a regular basis and depending on which side of the line you are the views of people are very different!!

I've been to Protaras, was lovely!
Hotel backed onto the gorgeous white sandy beach!
Were lots of nice little shops and cafes but only one nightclub (which didn't open 'til 2!) so there wasn't much noise.
There were busses that ran to neighboring Aiya Nappa if you wanted a night out.
