Just above my knee it feels like i have pulled a muscle or tendon, if I keep my leg bent ie when driving or sat at office desk, it really starts to ache, almost feels like I have done leg day when I try to walk on it after its not moved for a while - something I can cure myself (ie rolling pin) or do I need to see a physio?

How old are you, do you do any physical activity, describe the onset (gradual and progressive, or sudden etc), anything else make it worse etc etc

Could be patellar tendinitis.

The patellar tendon runs above and below your knee cap, the knee cap is a sesamoid bone held effectively within it. Patellar tendinitis can certainly cause pain above the knee cap. Also have a look at patello-femoral pain syndrome.

not to be pedantic, but in common parlance by the lay public and doctors, the patella tendon is only below the patella. Above it is the Quadraceps tendon and muscles of the anterior thigh. It may be embryologically quite sensible what you state, but I'm going to frown. smile

It's only going to cause confusion to suggest that above the patella is the patella tendon. 99.9% of the world says this is the quadraceps tendon. The pain may emanate from the patella tendon, but above the knee is something anatomically else.

Initially RICE, then seek help from a professional. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RICE_(medicine)
