MTB expander rings on cassettes (questions)

Does anyone here run one on a Shimano 10 speed cassette? If so which one do you run?

I've found the one from Absolute black which would give me a 40 on the back, and comes with a new lockring to replace the 11t and lockring on the cassette, but the others I've looked at say drop the 17t sprocket which I can't do as its riveted 5 sprocket block.

I've converted the MTB for the time being to be a 1 x 10 setup after I was given a 32t chain ring and found I was spinning like a nutter as I'm all flat with the odd hump! I've got hold of a 34t but now I'm concerned that I don't go low enough for the humps I do have as I only have 1 gear lower than 34t. The 32t gave me a 32 x 32 and 32 x 36, the 34 will only give me a 34 x 36, and I'm still an unfit fat knacker

I've recently ditched the front mech off my bike but previously had 2x10 so my chainring is a 36t. I was looking at a 42t expander cog for the cassette but worry about removing the 17t and having a big step. Can't afford to go 1x11 so think I might try one of these:

If i don't like it i'll prob just go back to 2x10 and stick it on ebay.

As above, you'll be better off running a wide range cassette then getting an expander.

I have a couple of mates with the Sunrace cassette - they found It easier to set up than when they'd had an expander previously.

No faffing swapping ratios out off your existing cassette - just swap the cassette and re-tune the gears.

Recently bought a Sunrace MX3 cassette. I've been running 1x10 with the standard 11-36 shimano cassette for a while, but with Ard Rock entry looming I wanted the bigger gearing.

Took the old one off, fitted the new one (along with a new n/w ring and chain) wound the B limit screw right in, and that was it. Perfect shifting.

No issues so far after 150km of riding including a day at Stiniog. The black MX3 cassette looks awesome matched with a gold KMC chain.....looks like an Aldi version of SRAM's Eagle setup

One thing to consider - when on the 42t gear you can't back pedal, chain goes back down into second. You can buy a RAD cage for the deraileur which should stop this but I'm not bothered by it.

In fairness even with a perfectly set-up XT 11sp set-up, if you back pedal all hell breaks loose, in pretty much any gear.

I run the One-up 42 tooth 10spd expander with their rad cage. Works perfectly, no chain issues in either pedaling direction!


( i also run their 50tooth shark 11spd expander on my XTR Di2 equiped bike, which is similarly excellent!)

Thanks Gents! I didn't even know wide ratio cassettes were available I suspect you are all correct and it would be more suitable for my use especially with Bike packing. I did notice that on my 2x rig (38t) on the Tuscany trail, I spent the majority of the time on the top 3rd of the cassette.
