I need a new one

Any ideas how much to install them costs?

I've had a quote and it seems a bit stepp for basically digging a hole......

£1450 + VAT + £15 per load to remove the spoil from the hole. (No idea how big a "load" is could be a thimble full could be a lorry full).
Thought it was particularly rich given that the guy quoting is the local farmer and he has all the equipment and wanted my hardcore and soil for free a few weeks ago.

I paid £600 for a septic tank that was for 3 houses and we all went thirds on it. So £1800. Your price sounds about right, but maybe not for just one house

Septic tanks rarely work these days.
The idea that bacteria feed on the settled sludge and 'treat' the effluent is good, but doesn't take account of the modern disinfectants and detergents that we all use today.
Around my way you can really only get away with a Klargester plant.

We have one and it works fine. We just have to be careful what goes down the sink/drain. can`t remember the name of it, but there is some great stuff we get from the US which is a sort of "accelerator" for the degrading process.

Glad to hear it! I'm a bit of a septic tank enthusiast to be honest.
We used to chuck roadkill in once in a while if the sludge built up. It amazes me that people get them emptied time and again without realising that they shouldn't need emptying and that they just have a shit-settling tank in their garden. The problem now is that when they do stop working the raw stuff heading for the ditch is a bit alarming for the water companies.
