Need advice please,

1) Would you upgrade to Gas Discharge lights?

2) Under heavy braking do the brakes feel smooth or notchy / juddery?

There was another question, but I've lost the plot!

Going for some munch!

1) I looked at this in great detail a while ago.
No.

2) I think under really heaving braking you can start to feel the pads being sanded down rapidly - but maybe that's my imagination. There shouldn't be any kick back through the pedal - unless your car has been standing for a while and the brakes are rebedding. If your seatbelt locks up, they're working fine

Cheers,

Andy.

That's a good description, explains it well.

Is this a generality, with the feel of the brakes?

Fancy going for some munch ?

1) Having now got them on the Mk2 I would say yes. Always thought the original lights were poor, but just put up with it.With the current set up I can see in the dark for the 1st time.

As for munch! a bit forward but why not, very kind. How about a curry?

wouldn't say mine felt like that nope. Different brakes though (RR). Mine feels very progressive and sensitive to the point where you can get it to the point of 'chirping' pretty much everytime. never had a car like that before.

as far sat nav... I'd look at the PDA based ones. they are pretty neat now. Makro has one which is as combined as any bespoke one for about 200 quid. Looks alot better than the tomtom box, or the regular PDA ones.

I used to have a toshiba PDA with GPS, software, etc but it was a bit of a pain.. loads of wires, farting about with pocketPC, etc. The semi-bespoke ones work better imho.

They were built by Medion. They have one which is PDA based but the screen is horizontal. it looked good.

The good thing about the PDA ones is that you can get the speedcamera addon of the net for free (checkpoint) or for a small charge (some others).

I stuck this on my dads medion and it is happily warning him (great female german accent makes you sh"t yourself anyway...veee av vaws of making you slow down....) of every speedcamera.

1 Don't know what the cost is, but the lights seem utterly amazing - but then we moved up from the Griff-Ghostly-Glow syndrome. I guess it's a cost/expected usage equation at the end of the day.

I just like switching 'em on and watching the colour change ............... oops! watch where you're actually going!

2 No - the braking is very smooth. Unless you're still getting used to the pedal box. Oh, and if you haven't realised, wet soles and a metal pedal set are a recipe for a leather cleaning session on those nice seats.

Generally I have found the set up relatively easy when switching from the eurobox - but most people at least comment on the difference. I find that I am relatively light on the brakes and then surprise myself when I squeeze them hard....

3 Heard a rumour that an updated Tom Tom (and TT Go) is on its way with Post Code option....

Hi Al,

I too have recently bought a Tuscan from Fernhurst - welcome to the club!

The gas discharge option on mk1 Tuscans was only for the full beam lights. My full beams are so bright with normal filament bulbs that I wouldn't bother to upgrade. However the dipped beams aren't great as standard, but I suspect that's got more to do with the way the lamp recess masks the left side of the beam.

My brakes feel like all other drilled / grooved disc setups under heavy braking. You can feel a slight buzz through the pedal from the drillings. If its any more than this then get Brian on the case - if they hadn't fully prep'd the car when you test drove it, then you could find it's generally much more sorted when you pick it up.

As for sat nav, I use Tom Tom 3 with a Bluetooth GPS receiver, but I'm lusting after a Pioneer AVIC X1. £1200 on eBay though...!

Yes! When you put main beam on it's great watching the road ahead go from dark to daylight over about 3 seconds.

Brakes are fantastic, as people have already said.
No judder, just a very slight (nothing more) bit of 'rumble' almost. Hard to describe.
Going from what I have read on here most peoples seem to be the similar.

What colour change do you get ? Mine definitelty change from a reddish-white to a brilliant blue-ish light and do appear to light half the countryside. I have been driving about for about 2 years and never really thought about it but they may be gas discharge.

Hi Guy's and Girl!

Many thanks for you words of wisdom

OK spoke to Fernies and Brian said that main beam is usually OK it's the dipped beam that could do with a bit more ooomph.. so I’m having the dipped beam upgraded to gas! Now we’re cooking, OH

Brakes, Brian is checking them over.

So...
Sat nav , looked at a Pioneer Post code driven beastie a couple of years back and that was about £2000 + Prices I think have come down a little since then.

Would like the nav to be plumbed into the radio slot.

Haven’t had time to look at any yet, any suggestions or thoughts?

Di lunch sounds great, then we could play I’ll show you mine if you show me yours,

Tuscan that is

Rather a nice navigation system here:-

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=5&h=&t=139018

Althugh depends on the colour of the interior as they are only available in black finish.

I went for a more simple arrow display one although still uses post codes, see my profile for pictures.

Thanks Nick, that given me a few pointers in the right direction.

Any other suggestion on the Sat Nav front?

How much does it cost to go the dipped beam gas route?
Lady Di had suggested that I think about this idea.
Will probably see for myself how good or bad the lights are and then take a view.
My old Chim lights were excellent so either I have superb eyesight or I drive too slowly at night!

The units are about £220 each and IIRC there's about a couple of hours to fit.

+ check out the price when a blub goes and consider the cost if a stone breaks a light. If you're changing the dipped beams, a control until will need to be put in the rear of the car which will keep the lights level so not to blind oncoming traffic.

Come on Guys and Girls...

Need advice on Sat Nav please, do all the major makes fit, only really been looking at Pioneer as that's normally fitted to Tiv's in one way or another so the wiring probably isn't much different! Or is it?

The most complex bit of installing any of the major manufacturer's sat nav units is finding a pulse for the road speed sensor. I have heard that you can use the same one fitted for the speedo, if you can find out which wire it is! If not, then it's another 100 quid or so to fit a new sender.

I'm only looking at Pioneer as I've already got a Pioneer CD changer and DAB radio which I don't want to replace. If you haven't got that restriction, then there are all sorts of possibilities depending on your budget.
