This isn't meant to sound like doom and gloom although it probably will.
I was reading the racist thread and wondering what makes some kids act up and thinking about dicipline etc. When it struck me..Have we reached the point of no return?
I got cained at school and never once backchatted a teacher or a prefect. As i get older i seem to err more towards the " it never did me any harm " although i'm thinking we could never bring back corpral punishment.
Attitude as well...is it too late to teach the younger generation about respect?, i don't mean REEspect but doing what you are told because you realise that your elders know better.

Yeah we have, just as we have had a change in the way people behave in one generation.
Example- nothing to do with respect:
I mean, my parents never really had sex before marriage did they?
yet nowadays its wise to try before you buy.
I would never dare do rude to my teachers. Makes you wonder why grandparents get thoroughly fed up with youngsters.
Where will it end.

1960's is almost certainly where it all went pear shaped. Its ironic that most of the angry old people who bemoan the behaviour of the youth of today are the very ones who started the rot.
I think the switch to Comprehensive education in the early 70's also bears some blame. Crap idea, badly implemented, and the education system has been on a downhill slide ever since.
Isn't it somewhat ironic that the rise of Political Correctness and the fall of "respect" are inversely proportional. Or perhaps not.
Liberals, bleeding hearts, sandal wearing, lentil munching, politcally correct, Greens, beardies - hang 'em all, and hang 'em high. To a man, sorry person, they're so naive that they don't see their pet causes being hijacked by politicians for their own ends.

The problem is the elevation of rights without responsibilities. Now, I believe that rights should be extended so that people shouldn't live in fear of racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and so on, but the problem we face here is this:
We have a generation already in circulation (and we're gearing up with another one) that knows what freedoms it is to expect, but not what duties it has to perform in return. The phrase I hear most often from unruly chavs is 'whatcha gonna do?', and they actually have a point - what are you going to do?
If you do actually take any kind of direct action against them, you contravene the rights they know so well and the law has the obligation to uphold them, but someone hasn't taught them what responsibilities they should uphold to deserve those rights, and that begins with parenting.
More to the point, that's embedded in a cycle of parenting - if you taught your kids something, they'll teach their kids the same thing. Problem is that statistically, the people who aren't likely to teach their kids this, seemingly, are the ones more likely to breed inconsiderately, so you end up with literally ghettoes full of irresponsibility and violent, dangerous kids all out for number one, who know that because their parents know of rights but not responsibilities, they will argue pointlessly with the police officer who brings them home.
I'm overjoyed to see that WD* and Dieselnut have just had a baby, because I know that that child's future is in responsible hands. Unfortunately there are far too many people undeserving of the titles 'mother' and 'father' in this country, and unfortunately I get called a 'Nazi' by the left-wingers if I suggest that perhaps people think about their responsibilities before having children.
