Hi all,

A colleague is leaving soon and has suggested that for her last day we have a lunch buffet, and everyone brings something in. A list will go around so that someone provides snacks, someone pudding etc, the usual. The person who's leaving has the following requirements:

  • No fats of any kind
  • No oils of any kind
  • No seeds
  • No nuts
  • Dairy is ok but it has to be totally fat-free.
Does anyone have any interesting suggestions? We're all at a loss. Normally at buffets I provide the quiche but I suppose that's out. It's been a while since anyone saw her eat, so no leads there either.

Thanks.

Tell the nut job to come up with some recipes or f* off.

No seeds - so that's rice, bread, pasta out.
No fats or oils. Great. So that's meat eggs and oily fish off the menu.

I'd show up with a tin of tuna and a banana, lob them at her and then sod off for some proper food. Bloody food faddists, they p*ss me off.

Tuna would have omega 3. Lob a brick at her.

Take the quiche, just because the colleague doesn't eat normal food doesn't mean everyone has to suffer.

It doesn't actually. At least not above trace levels. It's not an oily fish, it's more or less fat free. The quiche is a good scheme, that and a bowl of salad. At least then the normal people will get some proper food.

She suggested everyone brings something in? So you take what you want and she brings her own. I doubt she/anyone with that specific a diet expects everyone else to follow it as well.

Tuna is an oily fish!

Quiche - what is that made of?

Fresh only, not canned. Canned tuna has no fat in it. Check the figs on a can. Actually, I'll save you the trouble. 0.6% fat, OWS 0.2%. Like I said, not worth talking about.

So there's no point eating canned tuna for its fish oils then?? Just as well I take those capsules.

Nope. Canned tuna is basically water and protein. For oils you want sardines, herring, mackerel, salmon. All tastier than canned tuna, too.

If it's due to allergies or something I'd be terrified to give her anything anyway.

If it's because she's a fussy eater take some fruit maybe?

Actually, it looks like that's *exactly* what she is asking people to do. By saying that one person brings in starters, one mains, one desserts, etc, you are demanding that everyone conforms to the same nutrition requirements. If I were going I'd make it *very* clear that I'd be bringing stuff in for general consumption and that if anyone had any specific requirements then they should look elsewhere.
