Didn't really know where to put this?
Does anybody know where I would go or who I could contact to get help and advice on the do's and dont's of a certain aspect of the Muslim faith please? Hope that's worded correctly.
This would be in the Surrey area, Runnymede, TIA

Your local council probably employs a diversity officer whose job it is to know about these things too.

What is it you need help with? There are a few Muslims on PH, and lots of people have had exposure to Islam.

Asking one Imam on his perception on stuff.

Or asking hundreds.... and the wisdom of the crowds...

Hmmm...

Well, that is a good point - I work in the food industry and someone once asked me what the definition of "Halal" was. A bit of googling later and I was able to tell the person that there are more than a dozen definitions, depending on what school of Islam you are talking about.

It would be nice if all food was not halal.
I and probably 90% of the public do not want our food halal.

In fact - not so long ago - it was not.

In the Koran - it is acceptable to eat non Halal food if it is not available.

I am more than happy to stop unnecessary torture of our food chain.
Which - no matter how sky fairy you are - it is just animal cruelty. - because some bloke 1700 years ago could never envisage hygiene.

You'd need to ask loads and then make up your own mind.

They'll all have a different interpretation of what's what.

A pretty sensitive issue tbh, and as its job related I have to think carefully on what I can put on a public forum.
I will look into contacting someone at the mosque in Woking so I am a bit prepared should the worst case scenario happen. Happy to be contacted by pm if someone on here is a Muslim and could answer some questions for me.
Thanks

I work in food too. Most slaughter is not halal. I've worked in a 3 species slaughterhouse (sheep, cow, pig), non halal, a turkey slaughterhouse (non halal) and been in a couple of chicken places (non halal). I'm not especially comfortable with halal slaughter methods either, and I work in the places where animals are slaughtered. I'd far rather see them stunned first, and I know very well that stunning is totally humane. None of the animals have any idea what's about to happen because we go to great lengths to make sure that they don't. In chickens it's usually an electrical stun, turkeys get asphyxiant gas, sheep/cows/pigs an electrical stun across the head after a spell in a dark tunnel. Especially with pigs it's important that they remain calm, so the trick is that they go down the dark tunnel heading for a point of light. So far, so good, then the instant it pokes its head out, BLAM! Done. The one behind it can't see what's going on because you close off the tunnel so only one goes through at a time.

Many restaurants use halal food without making it clear.

Las iguanas for example. Scary.

It's not just meat though. Loads of other stuff needs halal certification, and the variability of the rules is really annoying.

I agree completely about the meat slaughter though.

Yes, there are a few that do this to make their food acceptable to Muslims. Of course nobody wants to deter other customers who have concerns about unnecessary suffering of animals during slaughter.

Halal of course just means "permitted" in Arabic. Anything that's not halal is "haram" - forbidden.

I can understand why people wouldn't eat pigs 2000 years ago, even to this day they live in and on filth. Many developing countries will put an outside lavatory over the pigsty and allow the waste to fall in. A mate of mine who lived in Kenya as a kid used to be frightened of the pig looking up at him when he visited his aunt in the country! I think I'd find it rather unnerving to this day. Given that scenario, the incidence of parasites in pigs, lack of refrigeration and basic food hygiene, I can see why you'd avoid it.
