Please could anyone help?

I am using a Netgear ADSL DG824m wireless modem gateway without any problems on my PC on the ground floor.

I also have a netgear me101 ethernet bridge upstairs, which talks quite happily to the modem downstairs using the Netgear configurator (flashing green lights confirm this too), but i just cannot get my browser to hook up to the internet on the PC upstairs. I've been at it for ages, even tried using Firefox browser.

Anyone any ideas please?

cheers

sorry, all a bit vague.

My hub PC is Win XP, but i have several other PC's dotted about the house, two running Win98 and one laptop running on Win 2000. The laptop works fine with the ME101 Bridge, so the Bridge is good, but i cannot get onto the internet with the other two using the same Bridge.

Both Win98 PC's can get on the internet when connected using a patch lead directly to the Wireless ADSL Modem Gateway, but not via the Me101 Bridge, which after all should just be an invisible lead... it's driving me bonkers!

The Win98 PC's are set up to automatically detect settings under the Lan Tab in Internet Options. Does Win98 require some manual settings to be made?

It's annoying that the Netgear devices are speaking to each other via the Netgear configurator, but the Win98 PC's won't communicate to the internet through the Bridge.

Any feedback would be massively appreciated.

cheers

Rob

The easiest way: On the XP machine: click Start/Control Panel/Network And Internet Connections/Setup Or Change Your Home Or Small Office Network and stumble through the on screen prompts.
While running the Network Setup Wizard on the ICS host computer, select the option to copy the Network Setup Wizard to a floppy disk.
Once you’ve completed setup on the XP, take the floppy to the next computer and insert it in the drive.
Double-click My Computer.
Double-click 3½ Floppy (A.
Double-click netsetup.exe.

Repeat for all computers.

It's worked for all the smaller networks I've tinkered with.

The long winded way is best - but this should get you started again..

Thanks scruffy, i tried that from your suggestion and was filled with hope! But nay, my hopes were dashed. Still when i start the browser it cannot find the internet connection.

I've spent hours on this, totally fed up now, i blame Mr Gates for this.

A few suggestions to help.

I thoroughly suggest powering off ALL of the computers and the router. Not just rebooting but powering off. Then power on the PC with the internet connection first after the router and bridge and then try the "problem computer(s)". If that still fails try a "working" computer to verify that you can still connect.

Still having problems try the following:

Can you verify that you have an IP address on the "failing" PC(s)? "ipconfig" from DOS/command prompt in Win98.

If you do can you "ping" the routers ip address? Again from a DOS/command prompt "ping ww.xx.yy.zz" <-- the ip address of the router.

Can you then ping another computer within your "home network"? Again from a DOS/command prompt "ping ww.xx.yy.zz" <-- the ip address of the other PC.

If you can do all of that then your home network is working and you might now try communicating with the outside world...

Can you then ping a remote network ip address such as 195.225.218.139 (Pistonheads.com) ? If this works your route to the Internet is fine but you need to try from all machines. Then try the web site name such as www.pistonheads.com from the "failing" machine(s)... if this fails then you might check if you have a "gateway" set on the failing Win98 PC(s) - the gateway will most likely be the ip address of the router. If you need to set a gateway a reboot is required.

Still having problems then post more information on the errors you're getting after you try the options above or anything else you try.
