I heard that PH likes old french bangers, so I thought I'd post the dealer photos of the Peugeot 106 Diesel I picked up last Friday for £500. I needed something that runs on teaspoons of diesel and cost nothing to run. Speed was not an issue, as long as it can pull itself up the steady hills of Northumberland, which it does quite well surprisingly compared to my 1.0 Micra or 1.6 Golf I've owned in the past. Handles well too once up to speed. It came with a new clutch, new timing belt and a full year of MOT.
It's one of the last ones they made, so it comes with all the mod cons such as a passenger airbag, central locking and power steering! My first tank of diesel (hardly driving carefully, new car type driving) returned 570 miles to 39 litres of diesel, which is around 66MPG
There is no rust underneath in the suspect areas such as the boot floor, but there is some surface rust on the front of the sills and around the battery. It resisted the screwdriver poke test before purchasing, but I'll be taking it back to the metal and wax oiling it before winter after my previous experience owning a K11 Micra. It also leaks some oil around the power steering pump, which I'm not to bothered about with it being 100% bangernomics.

I ran one of these for a 110 mile round trip 5 days a week for about 4 months over a pretty harsh winter back in 2008 after picking it up from my mate for the price of a few beers while waiting for my new car to be ready. It was brilliant! Those N/A diesel engines are very reliable and they will do 600 miles to a relatively small tank of diesel. The one i had was on a P plate so the first of the 'new shape'
The one i had was sat at 150k miles and was running strong when i sold it on.
Only thing that went wrong was the Alternator and the Throttle cable snapping. The former was about £40 all in to get right but i was properly broken down. The latter I ran a bit of army wax rope (obtained from a house near the break down) to the throttle under the bonnet, out into the passenger window where i used my left hand to operate the throttle to get home. £13 for a new cable and 20 mins fitting. Sorted!

Love 106s. Prefer an s1 though. I had a (not-quite) 1l petrol. Revved and revved and revved. With seemingly no effect. But I did get everywhere wanted including to Italy for my semester abroad. Going over the Alps was great fun... At night. In January. It was snowing.

My first car was one of these. Same colour and model and everything if memory serves. It was on 115k with no history and I added 20k in 11 months with the engine never so much as missing a beat. There's fun to be had hustling it along trying to keep the momentum up but god they're slow. Changed it for a 1.9td 306 dturbo rocket ship in the end
