Hi,

Could you please explain why my topic with you tube video review of a drive in a Porsche 996 was removed? I got an email saying you do not allow monetised clips but there is no advertising on my you tube channel, it is just a hobby and I get no revenue for it.. so why was it removed?

Thanks

Jack

Hi there,

I've asked the mods for their input on this as I'm unaware of the original thread or the background to all this. I should have an answer for you soon.

Thanks

Hi,

I've spoken to the Mods about this and they said that an advert had popped up when they watched the video? Is this not the case? (do you have a link to the video so that we can check again?)

Apologies if someone has made a mistake - if it isn't monetised then you can share it (in the appropriate place)

Cheers
JD

That's YouTube putting the ad up, not the OP. There's nothing that the OP can do about that. And he certainly will not be "earning" from these ads.

Do the mods not visit YouTube very often?

I appreciate you looking into it. This is the link to the video

censored

I've never had an advert pop up while watching my stuff and if anything did then it is you tube and unconnected to me as I have never activated the financial side of the channel. To be honest it would be an utter waste of time with my viewing figures in any case, I am way way too small to make anything back and as I said the filming is just a hobby (as you can tell from the films). I have 200 subscribers! Not exactly Fast and Loud or Roadkill.

Really enjoyed the video jackpe and it's exactly the sort of thing that should be on PH. And you're right, I didn't get any ads pop up.

Thanks guys for the kind comments, much appreciated. And your subscriptions too!

James, thanks for checking this out. Where does all this leave us, it does appear it was removed erroneously. Am i now free to report it? or can the mods reinstate the original thread? am happy to send them a screenshot of my channel settings showing the advertising is NOT enabled and that the channel is NOT set up to produce any revenue?

Thanks but Where is it? Could not find it. And in any case why can I not put it in the Porshe forum like I did before? It is after all a video about a Porsche

Is it only me who can see the irony of PH banning a video due to an advert! Pot / Kettle!

Hi there,

I've now got to the bottom of this having spoken with the mods and reviewed the situation.

Ultimately the description / reason for the link being removed was perhaps the cause of confusion, as you rightly point out the video wasn't monetised. However, what you are doing is attempting to drive traffic to your YouTube channel and/or blog. Having looked at this closely we see you've previously asked people to subscribe too, and the majority of your posts are links to videos.

Therefore we feel that you are taking advantage of the PH community to drive traffic to your YouTube channel, which is clearly demonstrated by the fact that at any opportunity you post a link to a video (or your blog).

We feel this breaks rule 4 of the rules of posting: (the first bit is the important bit)

"Do not post or link for the purposes of advertising or personal gain (including cars for sale) or cross-post across multiple forums. If you wish to advertise please use the classifieds or contact us directly. Please note that we do not allow members to advertise their own car in the forums, nor do we allow members to post asking for valuations on their current car (please use the classifieds as a guide)"

This situation has highlighted the fact that we need a clearer rule to account for a situation like this, and as such we're modifying our rules of posting to make it more transparent in future.

With all this in mind your post will not be reinstated.

Best wishes

James

Dear James,

Much appreciate you taking the time and having clarified the situation. With this in mind is there someone who I can discuss this with further? It is true that some time ago it was pointed out that I was it allowed to promote articles written for my website/blog so I stopped doing that. But I do feel that not even allowing me to post any of the you tube videos is a little bit draconian. You tube is the best and easiest way to share videos, as you yourself admit the channel is not monetised so really where is the harm? Why should Pistonhedders not have the chance to enjoy (or not) the little videos I do? There is no way of embedding the videos on Pistonheads directly so what other choice do I have? Can I at least share them on the you tube thread mentioned earlier in the this discussion?

I can understand you don't want Pistonheads to be used for the purpose of advertising without that being paid for but I am not a business, the car stuff is a hobby and it seems a bit extreme to expect me to pay to put down links to these these videos. I want others to enjoy them and benefit from the feedback I get on Pistonheads on how they can be improved. If it ever became commercial I can understand that the situation would change but as is I would hope you guys could reconsider this decision.

Thanks again for looking into this

Jack

The OP's video was great - I'd expect precisely this kind of content to be shared in a place like this. It's a sad indictment of the age we live in when a meeting place for petrolheads is having its chain yanked by the hand of bureaucracy to the extent that the very purpose of said meeting place is starting to be suffocated. It's tantamount to going to the pub and the landlord having wardens roaming around making sure you're not talking about certain things, lest you might contravene guidelines laid down by the brewery. Such a shame.

Depends entirely if the OP is getting money.

Youtube will put adverts on videos randomly, However it won't (or rather shouldn't) do this unless you select the monetise option. You can select overlay ads or pre-video video adverts.

The point though is irrelevant, to me (as the post above) the video is pretty good and the kind of content that would be shared on this site. I do not see harm of linking to a Youtube video directly on a thread.

I suspect if the admin team clamp down on this too much we will not only have less decent car videos to watch but decent members will get pissed off and go elsewhere. Pistonheads will then lose out on revenue from traffic and adverts.

No offense, the OP video was better than any of the Pistonhead videos put out to date - Don't shoot me James / team you are all decent people I know! -

I appreciate the support and kind comments on the video!

I really am not here for Pistonheads bashing, I have had some invaluable advice from the forums in the past, have been a member for many years, have advertised my cars for sale in the classifieds and regularly read the articles and features although I've not had much time recently to get too involved in the forum itself.

I don't want this rolling on and on but want to ask that a senior mod contact me so we can discuss this directly and want to emphasise that the blog/website is pretty much dormant now (aside from links to the videos) and that both website, videos and you tube channel only COST me money. None of it is monetised or commercial, it is part of my hobby.
