86 MY 280i S2, 23000 miles. I need to replace the shocks but should one do the springs as well? The springs look in good condition with no cracks or corrosion.

There is a misconception that springs "wear out".

Basically they don't, their spring rate is a mathematical equation based on number of coils, diameter of wire used and grade of steel used.

Springs can "sag", lowering the suspension but unless they are, for example, very rusty which would reduce the coil diameter they should be fine..... imho wink

On my TR6 the rear springs although not broken had certainly lost their strength and with an enthusiastic takeoff I used to drag the exhaust. New springs made a huge difference and certainly improved the handling.

Our 400 had new springs and shocks just before we got it. I never drove it before the change but now it corners like it is on rails.

Personally, I would change the springs while you're under there, then you know they're done smile

I would check the ride height, ok leave alone. You could also check the length of the springs off the vehicle to ensure they are similar. Hard to say with the mileage whether to replace or not.

The springs are quite cheap so stupid not to do them while it's all apart. esp with the age of the car.
