Recently I have become aware of a clicking noise when the ignition is turned off.
It appears not to affect performance although the car tick over appears to be more lumpy .
Has anyone a clue as to what causes this.

Is the noise behind the dashboard and quite short? If so, could be stepper motor resetting.

The noise appears to come under the bonnet between both rocker covers

Try getting someone to turn off the engine as you put your hand on the stepper motor, you'll feel it pulsing (clicking) if that's what it is, the stepper is at the back of the plenum on the right hand side.

Sorry i may not have been clear. The clicking occurs when I turn the ignition on and off when the engine is off eg not running . If it is the stepper motor resetting is this normal occurance?

The stepper should only reset once and it will only be a very short noise.

Thanks I believe that the sound is the stepper motor.
However the engine at tickover is still lumpy. Run this afternoon Rickover varied between 1200 and 1800 rpm but at one stage dropped to about 600 and would have cutout if I hadn't applied some throttle . Has anyone an idea what is causing this. I wondered if it was the coil . Leads were only replaced with higher grade ones about 2000 miles ago.r
