Freelander 2 heater fan

My Freelander 2 heater fan is making a nasty rumbling noise, which I believe is a common fault. I have read somewhere that it is possible to renew the fan/bearing etc. by accessing from the passenger footwell thereby reducing the requirement for a major strip out. Can anyone confirm that this is true and give me a clue what is involved.
