So started at the gym in March been going 3 to 4 times a week since lost weight got better at the xtraining and generally feel healthy. Focus is on weights (as a good weight loss tool apprently) and was making great progress up from 15kg per hand to 30kg per hand bench press (dumbells) with shoulders up to 22kg, then...

Ow this week my left shoulder really hurts worst bit is getting weights lifted for the first rep while seated on the bench for shoulder press. Left side was always weaker but not its painful.

I have stopped doing it with heavy weights (go back to 18kg) also yesterday used the machine not the free weights. But thinking I should stop shoulders all together for a while till pain goes.

Any suggestions, I want to keep training so can I just do legs, back an stomach etc an leave upper body for a while or do I need to give gym a miss.

No expert here, but I have had a recurring issue with my left rotator cuff for the best part of a year. I keep adapting my weight training regime in an attempt to rest the shoulder but nothing has worked for me. I have finally seen sense and have decide to weight training a miss until it heals up completely. Will see how it goes in the short term before deciding whether to see an osteopath.

Just focusing on jogging for now. And obviously keeping an eye on my diet!

Had rotator cuff injury in right shoulder. Physio made it worse, eventually had a steroid injection, let it rest for a few weeks and it has been perfect since. Then picked up an injury in left shoulder, ignored it for 12 months but got to the point here I couldn't put a coat on or sleep on it. Had a steroid injection and its 80% now but I can't lift my arm above my head properly. Think it needs keyhole surgery to remove bone growth that's causing impingement and squashing a tendon.

Based on my experience then if you keep working it then it won't heal. Steroid injection would be my first investigation. It reduces swelling in the tendon, stops it rubbing and allows it to heal. Obviously you need to go to the doctors for proper diagnosis.

Think I injured my rotator cuff playing rugby a few months ago, and now it's getting painful again with playing tennis and summer training for rugby starting.

Anyone got any good stretches or anything to do just to help it?

Pretty much the same for me. It still hurts everynow and again if I strain the shoulder. But not as bad as when I first did it.

Thanks for the advice seems a common injury / issue. So I am off to Piliaties tonoight instructor is also a physio an helped with my disc injuries few years back and I have gone to the class ever since.

I will just leave off the shoulder press etc and anything that causes me pain in that area see if rest an a few stretchs sort it if not go to dr.

I have been told by the instructor there are two types of pain. Good pain life stiff or sore muscles from working them and bad pain which feels like an injury an affects day to day. This is certianly more the latter so I dont want it to get worse.

Oh an while I know many on her have hulk like strength I always wanted to be able to bench press 50kg total and when I hit that a few weeks back an then went on to 60kg I was really pleased. So i suspect my rush to progress caused this.

Slow an steady wins the race.

I too have a left RC problem. I went from being able to strict OH press 85kg to now struggling with even 30!

Bench press isn't so bad, but Incline or any vertical press is painful, so I stopped doing these for a while, and concentrated mainly on pulling exercises and light RC stuff with resistance bands, which has helped.

I was told that RC injuries can take months to get better, and there's no way I am holding off training for that long, so I just work around the injury.

I had various RC problems over the years, eventually found a physio that really knew what he was doing who identified where the weakness was and gave me some specific gentle exercises for that.

The exercises sorted out the imbalance and now my shoulders behave themselves.

The shoulder is a complex joint and there's no one cure, but it's worthwhile finding a decent physio and getting him to explain what's wrong and how to put it right.
