Hi All

I have a spreadsheet with a column of numbers, and i need to multiply each of those figures by 1.4, but i dont want to keep the original value on the spreadsheet, i just want the new number.

However, i can't seem to do that, i know the various options of SUM and PRODUCT etc, but that relies on keeping the original row, with my prices, in, which i don't want. If i create a new column to the right, i can do it fine, but i still can't delete the original column as that deletes the sum of the new one!

All i want to do is multiply the column i have by 1.4 and not to add any more columns etc, surely that's do-able?

Hope that's explained adequately!

Thanks, Mark

Create new calculated column. Copy the results. Highlight original values, paste special values only, delete calculated column.

Type 1.4 into a cell
Copy that cell
Highlight the cells you want to change
then do <paste special> and select 'values' and 'multiply'.

Thank both - confused by both though....

HappyMidget - what is a calculated column? One that is the sum of a formula?

sidicks - all fine except i can't see how i can select 2 options (i.e. 'values' and 'multiply') at the same time?

Hi, all you need to do is copy the results of the formula, and paste back in the same place as 'values'.

In my version of excel, the past special menu has 3 sections:
1. Paste - where you set values, formats, all (default) etc
2. Operation - where you choose none (default),madd, multiply, subtract etc
3. Other. - where you can choose to skip blanks or transpose etc

The radio buttons are separate for each section.
