Hello everyone,

I bought this bike last year and been mainly using it to commute. I did Ride100 last week and managed to average 20.5mph which i was delighted as it was my first time doing it. However want to try and hit bigger speeds and hoping that i am fit next year want to try and have a higher average speed.

Given my current level of fitness, would spending more money on bike parts or a new bike help me go faster?

The issue i have at the moment is that my HR seems too low, I average between 120-130. Ride100 average was 129bpm@20.5mph. I changed the cassette to a 11/25(?) and the chainset to a bigger one in the last 2mths which as helped.

There are a couple of guys here who have much better bikes and managed to do Ride100 in 4:06.

A prepared, well trained and fit cyclist will always beat an unfit under prepared cyclist on the world best bike.

I'd suggest getting more prep done rather than upgrading as most people are fitness limited rather than equipment limited.

If you were to upgrade I'd look at what your current set up is like and what you'd want and work out the most cost effective way of "upgrading"

To buy 1hr improvement of time in RL100 , £ is better spent in taking some advice from a good coach, taking a fitness test and making a 1 year plan. Upgrading kit will in essence buy you marginal gains .... Think what your looking for is Bloody huge gains !

Hoping so!

I frequently run marathons, so should be reasonably fit. Currently looking into joining a club to help get faster and hopefully learning what riding in a group means.

Might be worth seeing if you can get into a more aero position.

I have been trying to use the drops, which i was surprised with how much of a difference it actually makes. So from the feedback looks like i will be running my current setup for a little while longer.

Thanks everyone who contributed.
