Seat belt law

I drove the parents 1959 frogeye today. It has no belts. My 3.5 year old was very interested and wanted to go out in it. I wasn't keen on taking him, and tonight I've been looking at the laws.

It seems that as he's over 3 he can travel in a car with no belts, but only in the rear. This is tricky in a frogeye.

Anyone able to advise? Seems like a grey area.

Seems clear enough:

"If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts, for example it’s a classic car, you aren’t allowed to carry any children under 3 years old in it.
Children over 3 are only allowed to sit in the back seats.
These rules only apply if your vehicle was originally made without seat belts."

No under 3s at all.
Children over 3 in the back seats only.

If there are no back seats, no one can sit in them.

IIRC, the early Frogeyes didn't even have an opening boot, so that may be an issue too.

if there's no back seat, the kid can't be driven unless it's an emergency. Seems like a good excuse to trade up to a 4-seater 3000 if you ask me...

I totally see the reason behind the law for a 3 year old but my 6'3" 15 year old nephew who plays county rugby??

I think there's a clause somewhere that says its fine if you play county rugby so you should be OK

No frogeye had an opening boot (from the factory at least)

You can legally lash them to the luggage rack with bungee cords

I think you can safely 'bungee', a three and a half year old into the front seat of a Frogeye!

I imagine you need to wait until he is either 135cm tall or 12 years old before he can legally travel in there. There doesn't seem to be a clear definition. But the two criteria above apply to when a child does not need a child seat or booster.

one of the period accessory's that you could get for a frogeye was a small seat that clipped/attached to the tunnel so that a child could set between the parents

I would simply fit belts and see if you can get a kids seat the fits. What the law is and what I could live with are quite diffrent here for me.
