BF4 as a new sniper - help!

I'm a little late to join the BF4 party, but I bought the game last week having got bored of COD.

I've played mainly as Engineer and have progressed to level 20 and have access to a load of launchers/RPG etc.

My problem is with the initial Sniper kit that you get. It's by far the worst sniper rifle I have ever used in a game. It seems to take at least 3 shots to kill anyone and it's bolt action. After the first shot they usually spot me and take me out. I can't kill anyone with it!

I understand that new (better!) rifles and attachments will become available after a number of kills but I'm not getting anywhere.

Any tips on how I can get passed this first weapon as a sniper?

What I did (IIRC) is to run a non-sniper rifle as the main weapon and a silenced people. Rack up a few kills that way to level up a little....

Top tip! I'll set up the sniper with a decent SMG or pistol until I unlock a half decent rifle.

Don't you have to use a weapon type to unlock more of that weapon type?

Play HC for a little bit and camp with it on the naval strike maps

I used an M60 on it with bipod and med scope. Was picking off enemies from a fair way away with ease.

Could someone remember how to open the map up ingame also? Level 119 and still never done it !

I'm also late to it, mainly to get my eye in for BF1 in a few months.

Playing in normal mode is basically pointless. You light up on the minimap and everyone comes running. Play Hardcore mode.

The only thing with HC mode is most people are snipers or in vehicles. Can get very frustrating at times!

Practice practice practice! You will get there but you have to put the time in. It's frustrating as hell at times, but when your on form and the bullets just seem to land it feels amazing!

How do I get onto a hardcore match? Most of the game types seem to require some kind of DLC purchase. I've been playing conquest so far. (Xbox 360)

Try to get a range finder on your first sniper rifle and the straight bolt Asap.

Makes sussing out the range and sniping 10x easier, I'm not a great sniper and I can hit 500m head shots first time every time with it.

Might be an idea to put a medium range scope on it and use it as a marksman rifle
