Insect bites, more severe reactions this year?

Maybe it's just our family, but out of the three of us, historically two of us have never had any significant adverse reactions to midge or 'mozzie' bites. Nothing, at worst a little red mark for a very short time and that's it. Mrs is a different story.
Anyway this year the two of us that have never had an issue have had markedly worse reaction to some bites, currently my arm is quite swollen to what looked like a mosquito that bit me the other day by the river.
Clearly it's my own fault for not putting on repellent even though not usually needed it in UK. The usual post bite actions are perhaps less effective than normal, After Bite Pen if available within one hour, Eurax cream for the itching, and chlorphenamine in the event of any significant swelling.
So is anyone else seeing more significant after effects of insect bites this year, or have we been just unlucky living near to wooded areas by the river.

I think there are just more biting insects about this year, which means you have a higher chance of getting a bad reaction. Also where they bite makes a difference, right on a big vein and it can infect easily - I had an ankle vein bitten once and it swelled up badly enough to need antibiotics.
Perhaps the mild winter we had didn't kill off enough larvae or whatever they leave around.
I am not an expert but have noticed the same as you this summer in our family, both in the UK and on holiday in France. Where we go in France (same every summer) we usually don't get a single bite between any of us, but we all got them this year.
Getting fed up with the missus insisting on having all windows open in the evenings, that's when the buggers rise and get in the gaff.
Perhaps the mild winter we had didn't kill off enough larvae or whatever they leave around.

I agree, me and partner bitten to hell in Crete last week but have been bitten all "summer",here also.
