Does anyone have a schematic of the dash wiring?
I am asking as I have a strange problem in that sometimes when the ignition is off, the alternator light glows, as well as the oil pressure lights, and the dash LEDs. The fuel gauge also powered.
I've measured the volatge and seem to have around 3v present on these items. Thinking it could be something to do with the immobiliser or maybe a bad earth as I also get the gauges readings changing (usually end up with the fuel gauge saying i've got more fuel than when i started off!).

Yes I've disconnected the battery for now.. First discovered the problem due to the battery being totally flat the other morning.
Unfortunately Steve's book doesn't have a diagram for the dash, just the main loom connections. Think I'll have to spend an afternoon (or more) tracing things with a multimeter.

Been thinking, but I'm back to normal now. 
Your car is exhibiting the signs that someone has turned the key in the ignition, when they haven't, so perhaps a good place to start is the ignition switch itself. There have been a number of threads in the last year about worn ignition switches causing problems. IIRC they are a Vauxhall item, so built in obsolescence is a given. They cost about £20, and I don't think it involves a key change, though I may be wrong - perhaps the musicians on here can confirm or deny?

Ignition switch is a plastic unit that simply pushes on to the back of the ignition barrel (where the key fits).

Thanks - I'll also check the ignition switch, however it is not as if the ignition is on as the lights only glow dimly.
Does the ignition switch contol a main relay (via the immobiliser I assume)? Now wondering if the relay could be at fault... I'll have to get the top of the dash (again!) and have a check of a few things with a multimeter.

There is an ignition feeds relay in the fuse box as per the diagram:

Hi, thanks, no not as yet but that was also on my list - however when I had the top off the dash at the weekend I did unplug the loom connector that goes to the back of the speedo which has the battery charge light in it - & the battery charge light went out (as expected) but the heater indicator leds in the dash still were glowing.. not sure if this would be the same as disconnecting the small wires to the back of the alternator - as far as I am aware the 'battery charge light' is connected from the back of the alternator straight to the bulb in the speedo, the other side of the bulb is connected to the ignition +ve feed - although I may be wrong!Thanks for the other posts with the links for the wiring diagrams - unfortunately though I still haven't been able to get one for the dash itself - the ones posed are similar to the ones in the 'bible' and don't include the dash wiring (they just seem to have the connections to the dash loom connector). Think I'm going to to draw up my own diagram when I get chance to take of the top of the dash again...
Just an update - after finally finding the ground / earth chassis connections on the transmission tunnel (involving cutting a flap the carpet to get access) I've discovered that the offside/drivers side bolt was a bit loose - this would hopefully explain the problems I've been having. Thanks to Steve D for the idea to check this!
