New S1 project on the horizon
Discussion
Hiya guys, new to the forum, I'm Paul in Stalybridge, Manchester.
Iv been looking at buying a project car for some time now, looked at 7's, old VW bugs and campers until I got talking to a boss in work and found out he's got an 'S' on his drive under a cover, it's been there 6 years and needs a new home. Bit of sweet talking on my part and Iv managed to secure it for not a lot of coin! Should be taking delivery in a few months as I need to clean out my garage and put a few things in storage...
The car is all there just needs a bit of tlc mainly bodywork and interior i.e. needs new carpets and roof and bodywork needs a respray! Hopefully going to try and do all the work myself.
Iv been searching the web trying to find sources of parts and info on the 'S' so far Iv found a few places but anyone with any info or recommendations I'm all ears..
Cheers guys

Hi paul,
good luck with the restoration, right, so here we go this will be extremely helpful to you 'S-Series Alternate Parts List' http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Most things can be got off good ol ebay, burtonpower, mlperformance, but there is http://tvr-parts.com/ (last resort, prices
) racetech, powersperformance etc, just remember parts vary from different S models, ford 2.8 cologne, 2.9 & rover v8

This is by far the best place for information and advice - see above the posts for useful information too
There is also a Facebook page which is also useful.
once you have the S in your garage the first thing I'd do is ask for local help in checking the condition of the chassis - especially the outriggers.

well done for getting an S Paul.
As above...plus my thoughts
...best source of info is this forum
...loads of the mechanicals are Ford so not too bad to get once you found out what they are.
...chassis outriggers worth checking although not the end of the world to sort
...dont worry! ...there are cheaper alternatives to the original front indicator lenses (it's an S thing)
personally dont worry about paint work to start with, having it shiny may make you not drive it like it likes to be driven...then bring it to some events,
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
and maybe even an S Club EuroTour...

Cheers guys, I'm already on the faceache page. Iv also been researching about chassis outriggers and by the looks of it even if they look good from underneath once you get a few fingers over the top they can start to crumble... To be honest depending on time and work involved I may well lift the body to check the chassis, Iv bought this to play with and tinker in my garage over winter rather than drive straight away. I'm sure I will come across many gremlins and stumbling blocks... 6 years exposed to the British weather can't be good for anything never mind a plastic car from Blackpool

To be honest I'm not sure if it's an S1 or S2
I know it's definitely an S haha
Are you sure?

for smiles per £ invested you won't find a better project.
Apart from an S2 or 3 with the vastly superior 2.9i engine
Have fun with it and post up some pictures when you get it

Hi Nellybobs/Paul,
Welcome to the best forum!
Nice to hear of another prospective S owner in the neighbourhood.
I'm not far from you, just south of Stockport. If you need any help/ advice/ encouragement, just PM me via my profile page. ( click on my name in the margin and it will appear. Then click on 'Email me' ) I'll be pleased to have look over your acquisition and advise you of useful local contacts.
If your S has been outside unused for 5 or 6 years, I reckon you are going to be busy over winter. The perfect project!
Good luck,
Glen

Cheers Glen, good to know someone local in the know, the car at the moment is actually in Hazel Grove probably not to far from you.. I'm going to have a good look at it when I get the chance and make a list of things to be done so I'm prepared for when I get it.. I'm expecting to be busy with it but then again that's why I'm buying it

A neighbour of mine spotted it whilst out walking his dog, and told me about it about 18 months ago. I have had a brief look at it and tried to find out what was happening to it, because it needs saving. After knocking on the door on quite a few occasions, I finally managed to get an answer. It was his his son?, who gave me his phone number, so I sent a text message. Finally he replied and I spoke to him ( Louie? ) on the phone. He said he intended to restore it. I told him if he needed any help to let me know. A couple of weeks later he had pumped the tyres up and moved it to a different spot on his drive, but it has had nothing further done to it since then. I was thinking of making an offer for it, but realistically I have neither the space or the time to undertake the project. I would like somebody to bring it back to life, it seems such a waste of an S.
As far as I can recall, the last tax disc was dated 2008?
On the body, the lacquer is peeling and the bootlid paint is crazed.
The body looks straight with no evidence of accident damage as far as I can tell.
The black hood was green from being outside uncovered for ages, the back window iis opaque.
The magnolia interior looks relatively good, it doesn't look to have leaked inside.
Couldn't really see the state of the carpets.
I have not looked underneath but I would imagine the outriggers and possibly further chassis work would need doing.
It is an S3 with the longer doors and it has the desirable optional driving lamp bonnet.
Front indicator lenses are chipped.
I have not seen under the bonnet, so no idea what needs doing, or even if the engine turns over or starts and runs. ( It would be best to take the plugs out, squirt a bit if oil down each bore and turn it over by hand and then on the starter to get some oil flowing to the vital bits first.)
It is a 'G' reg, so 1989/90.
I sometimes drive past it, but the house curtains are always closed, and I don't want to disturb anybody.
I think with a LOT of tlc, it would make a good car. But you'd have to be prepared to spend both time and money on it.
On the plus side, values are on the way up.
Get in touch if you want me to have a proper look at it.

Thanks for the info pal, yeah it's Louie's car and he's got no time for it with work and other stuff so after I found out he had it I said I'd have it! Iv not even seen it yet to be honest..
From what he says it starts fine, runs with a slight misfire, he put a new clutch in a while ago and he said if he vould get an mot on it I could drive it home! As for the chassis I'm told they are solid but I have my doubts. From what I can see I can get all the bits it needs such as roof, interior if needed and I can sort the bodywork. Iv seen a lot of mention on these front indicator lenses?? Aparantly they are hard to find? How hard? :/

There are alternatives for the indicators, so don't worry too much about them. The originals were Leyland Sherpa van, now VERY expensive if you can find any. A guy in Holland sometimes has a batch made.
Others that can be fitted are BMW ( E30 I think ) Kia Pride, Nissan Terrano/ Ford Maverick
First priority, as with any TVR, is the condition of the chassis and outriggers.
I would expect the brake discs & drums yo be pretty corroded by now, and probably front calipers seized and rear slave cyls to be seized or leaking fluid.
All the tyres will need replacing, even if they look ok, they won't be safe, so I imagine it would be difficult to get an MoT pass as it stands.
It is possible that the roof could be saved with a bit of effort and the right stuff. The stitching would need attention, as the thread will be rotten. Not sure if the milky back window could be polished to a clear state?
To sum up:
HPI Check before you obtain title.
Chassis
Mechanicals: Engine / Brakes/ Running gear
Bodywork
Cosmetics/ trim

Yeah cheers Glen
the car is going to get a full strip down anyway, maybe even a body off if needed.
Iv been a VW/Mercedes technician since leaving school and for the past 7 years Iv been fixing trains. This project is something to keep my mind going
fixing trains isn't as exciting as it sounds so I can't wait to get stuck in
