Just seen a great uncle after a number of years who has now lost his vision and refuses to leave the house. Due to Diabetes. I am going out like that so going to try (again) to quit sugar.

Good luck. It's in everything. Anything "-ose".

And white carbs are mostly glucose too, once your stomach chops the starch up. That's your Weetbix or toast for breakfast, the sandwich for lunch, and the pasta for dinner. All, basically, sugar.

Interesting topic this.

I do have a pita bread with my lunch, never pasta, no sweets or sugar, no soft drinks of any kind. No prepared food. No alcohol,no red meat. No cereals .I also have a slice, sometimes two, of whole grain bread with dinner. Of course there is sugar in fruit, so I have and apple or an orange most days.

I stopped taking sugar in coffee or tea years ago. If you have 3-4 cups a day thats 6-8 teaspoons worth straight away you've cut

I still have a sweet tooth, but now prefer coffee without.

Mad to think there's more in one tin of Coke than all the coffees of the day.

Moderation is the key. No need to cut any food group out completely, just eat a balanced, healthy, mixed diet and do a decent amount of exercise.

Good luck with your reduction in sugar thumbup

I stopped eating sugar and white carbs back in January this year and I'd say its well worth doing, the withdrawal was hard, harder than I would have believed possible but sugar is very addictive.

I do still eat both if I want to but the key word for me is "choice" as I haven't given up anything but I just choose not to eat them most of the time.

I did it primarily to aid in weight loss but there are significant overall benefits for me - less being bloated, more energy, sleep better - there are more benefits but I don't want to get on my bandwagon biggrin

yes

Carbs will convert to sugar. Vegetables contain carbs. #quitoxygen

Don't have to say no, eat dark chocolate instead.

No they aren't, no more than cellulose is sugar. Reducing the amount of simple sugars in the diet is laudable, demonizing all carbohydrates isn't.

Cellulose and starch are very different. Cellulose is indigestible to humans; starch is quickly glucose. Try google on "metabolism of carbohydrates", e.g.

I don't need to look at Google, thanks. I studied carb metabolism as part of my degree. The point is that just as cellulose is not sugar, nor is starch.

Harder than I thought. I am alright at home but work is stress city at the moment and the biscuits get hit hard!

Still have managed to reduce my intake. The issue is that it is either all or nothing.

Good luck with this. Sugar is my weakness. I managed to quit smoking a lot easier than cutting down on sugar. If I don't have any for a day, I get a little agitated and start craving badly.

My biggest weakness with sugar? Biscuits. God I love them, but desperately need to cut them right down. I have a habit of almost finishing whole packs in one go.

Having started gym again, I think I'll also give this a shot sometime in the very near future.

Carb high foods are converted to sugars and excess are stored as fat.
replace biscuits with a few nuts or pork scratchings
drink plenty of water
vegetables that grow above ground are fine
eat more fat to avoid feeling hungry - cook your food with butter not oil
Blue milk and cream are fine
no pasta, potatoes, rice, bread
cauli mash is surprisingly good
dont drink beer - take a red wine occaisionally (this is the hard bit)

A few days? Quitting sugar is going to make the rest of his life difficult. Fruit would be the hardest for me.

Sorry to hear about your great uncle.

Out of interest, how old is he, what medical history does he have, and is he taking Statins?

What hell do you actually eat! wink

Yes interesting topic. I've been told that I should cut out sugar, but when I think about it, I don't actually eat very much of it to start with. Generally I don't have any real simple carbs or sugars on a daily basis. I do eat whatever I want (although not much dairy abd a few other bits due to allergies). I'm not a fan of sweets or biscuits or chocolate, don't take sugar in coffee either and if I do have pop it's usually sugar free.

I have a couple of slices of bread a day, but since I started making my own from a sourdough culture and organic flour the bloating I used to get with bought bread has totally gone. One of the best changes I have made to my diet. Plus it's quite therapeutic.

I'm not in bad shape (aside from some injuries at the moment).

Good luck! But is cutting it out totally the way? Surely a conscious reduction would be better and less painful?
