Because it's a present for someone who has given me a budget champagne and I want to see if I can find him one better than the one he has given me.

LIDL have a couple of good ones at about a tenner! Can't remember the brand but they definitely aren't 'own brand'!
We've always found Prosecco better in the sub £20 price range though!

I am thinking sub-£35 as budget.

You can often get some Bolly, Veuve Clicquot or Mumm in that price range. Not as good as the real thing but, as always, the big consideration is what tastes best to you for the price you are willing to pay!

I would prefer something less well known. Like Gosset, to give an example.

Wel for £35 waitrose have Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut NV which is nice.
