What can DVLA do? Change your plate?

Just so long as the police have it on record, in case any tickets come through, there's not much can be done - unless you'd like them to put a flag against you on their in-car systems, so you keep getting tugged to check if you're you...?

Send proof for the first issue it may just be a misstyped plate...

If you get too many and can afford it buy a £150/250 private plate..! Problem solved...

make sure your car has either window stickers or something that makes it stand out,
take dated photos,
it will come to the day when you have to prove it wasnt you.

As last post. And it might pay to spend a few quid on new plates, with some form of allowed personalisation on them. Then keep receipt for them, along with dated photo.

Interested to know what you think the Police should have done? It's your plate, so all the databases will lead them to, emm, You. Short of tracking down every similar silver coloured Merc in the country, making a record of your concerns is about the best they can do surely?

First off, they could actually show some interest in the crime being reported to them rather than giving the OP the impression that they don't give a rats arse about it!

Secondly, they could have advised the OP to put a cheap private plate on their car for the time being, and then put a marker against the OP's original registration number for it to be pulled over if spotted on the road - Now knowing that the car with that registration number on it is a cloned car!

Yes it might take a while for it to be spotted, but chances are, sooner or later it would be pinged up on ANPR or by a patrol car and the driver could then be caught driving a car illegally.

I suspect that if it were your car's registration plate that had been cloned then you'd be wanting the Police to take a bit more positive action than basically telling you that it's your tough scensoredt!

This and If I knew 100% someone was running round with my plates I'd stick a cheap private plate on the car to get rid of the problem.

The police HAVE to act (practically all they can do is put a PNC marker on, but that is enough - downside will be ANPR related stops for six months, of course). You need to return to the station with all of the required information and politely insist. If they continue to fob you off then ask to speak to a uniformed inspector for the purpose of making a formal complaint, and see how things develop. If need be make the complaint, but Id be surprised if it gets that far.

Easily done by main dealers ,I had two jags to fit some equipment into ,both new and identical colour but differing specs .
Just by chance I noticed that they had been fitted with consecutive plates but fitted to the wrong vehicles .

With the closure of DVLA local offices, I don't know how easily one could do this now, but someone from the DVLA needs to see your physical car to prove that the chassis on your car matches the V5 and that the chassis plate has not been tampered with.

OR, if you have already established contact with the Police, ask them where you can report with the car to show an officer that you've the "correct" car and matching V5 etc.

Cheshire police has some advice.

https://www.cheshire.police.uk/advice-and-support/...

Guardian newspaper also has advice half way down -

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/feb/27/numb...

"A DVLA spokesman says: “Where a vehicle keeper believes their vehicle has been cloned we will consider issuing a new registration number if there is a recurring problem. We would not charge for [this] but the keeper would need to have the plates made up by a registered supplier."

The OP has done nothing wrong and so has nothing to fear. He is innocent until proven guilty.
