Ordered a pair of inner track arms (tie rods) as the ball and socket at the steering rack has noticeable slop. I received them today and I've got the rod with the ball but not the socket. Consulting the parts manual, it looks like there a set screw on the socket. And does the socket back up against a spanner jam nut? Seems the socket would wear along with the ball. Is there a source for the socket and any other small parts I may need. I don't want to pull it apart before I have everything I need. Anybody fooled with these? Hope that all made some sense.

(Generic answer)

I think most racks have the end nuts tightened to set the 'free play' and then nut is staked. Yes technically the socket will wear too, but if it's evenly worn probably adjusting end nut will compensate. I think the 'ball' does tend to wear unevenly more then the socket ?

That's from doing Triumph racks a few times - I think the Ford ones are similar construction [Not power racks].

Cool. Thanks. I'll scope it out. It's like 200 degrees with equal humidity. Garage is like a sweat lodge.

Hi. My 280i failed the MOT for play on the inner rack ball joint. The joint is held together by a lock ring which at first I couldn't remove. Later found that there was a lock pin holding the lock ring. Some are just peened over. The plastic cup on mine was identified as a Ford Corsair 2000E! Eventually sourced from "Kiley-Clinton Engineering Ltd" in Birmingham. Not much use to you in the US? I didn't find any settings for tightening the joint other than no play but able to articulate within the housing. Hope this is of some help. J C.

That lock ring with the drilling and pinning... sometimes when they've been monkeyed with there's a bead of weld holding it all together... just what you need in a safety-critical component, random heat effects rolleyes
Word on the underground grapevine is that the non-PAS rack was from a Cortina but with the TC arms from a Granada to give the required length for the wedge. Same goes for the original (ex-Cortina V6) PAS rack; the later Supra Engineering one I have no data on.
Not stating it as fact, just what I was told some years back.

Wouldn't surprise me if the centre bit of the Granny and Cortina racks are identical anyway....

I know for example that the Triumph racks were all pretty much identical from Herald through to Stag - with only the details like mounting brackets and rod length differing between them.

My RHS inner tie-rod is shot. JD, where did you source the parts from? I'm in Rapid City, SD. I've asked Bill at Dominion to quote on a new rack. Thinking that maybe the simplest and quickest route to getting the car fixed. There is a vendor on ebay in the UK selling LHD Cortina racks for 99.00 GBP.

Success. Not sure if mine was staked or spot welded but it came apart nicely with a big adjustable and a plumbers wrench. Couldn't tell as the it was facing up and back. Two small metal fragments came off. Weird but interesting set up. Getting the new gaiter over the rack was the hardest part. Hope my stake is good enough! One less clunk for now.

I got the inner from Bill Rachal at Dominion Spares. Not cheap, think it was $60 or $70.

I have a 1986 280i with a bad inner tie rod. Dominion Spares seems to be out of business.

Any idea of where to source an inner tie rod???
