Is it just me who is developing a pathological hatred of the word "inspired"? Why is it that kids/teenagers/children all have to be a forced "young people" and that no one can ever see a sport and just fancy a go at it/thought it looked like good fun/thought they'd try it?

Cue some crap staged BBC footage of a "young person" being interviewed at their local swimming club. "Well, I was hunting for Pokemon behind the sofa and I looked up and Tom Daley was on the telly and he dived off this board and it inspired me. So I joined a diving club with other young people who had also been inspired and I go every Saturday..." Cut to instructor "oh yes, many young people who have been inspired by the likes of Tom Daley are members". GAH!!!!

Even the BBC sports tagline is "get inspired" FFS. I love sport, I love the Olympics, I know a number of team GBR competitors but for some unknown reason the over-use of that word is really grating!!!!

Right, I'm now waiting for that lightning bolt moment of pure inspiration to inspire to go and make a cup of tea and inspire me to go and do some work.

The irony is that most 'inspirational' people are whoever the media decides to highlight at any given time!

Shame that most (not all!) people put in the spot light by British media are morons like people who appear on Big Brother. Hardly aspirational but with a generation of people chasing Pokemon it's hardly surprising!

Not as bad as people who insist they are 'passionate' about every last bloody thing.

Not as annoying as "In today's economic climate" or to "cascade" information in a work context.

This. The fella that spoke in his CV of his passion for Quantity Surveying didn't get invited to interview.

Everyone's inspired, or a hero. That's another word that gets bandied around a bit too much.

I am the person alluded to who, instead of being inspired, sees something on the TV and decides I might have a go. Nobody has inspired me, and nobody is my hero.

and the ones who "feel" instead of believing or, better yet, knowing.

I see your 'inspired' and raise you with 'passionate'. That bloody word appears on 90% (or so it seems) of everything I read on the Internet.

Nothing wrong with it in my opinion.
Having said that there needs to be more elements of 'reality' thrown in.
Using the word 'inspired' or 'inspiring' without 'the baggage' that goes with it, ie. the immense amount of time/work required to place yourself within the top % in order you can say "yeah, I've made it"...only leads people down a path of 'defeatism' (if thats a real word or not).
But then also with that the reality of what you want to achieve and how likely you are to achieve it.

It can only be a good thing to create a mind set that being more active is good for everyone.
Its better that than just turning the 'ethos' of sport in to nothing more than a corporate/financial pursuit.

And much better than having a population happy to sit in front of the TV/internet and complain all day wink

I think you've highlighted the issue.. It was on the BBC, it's a contrived, god awful media service that's simply stuck in the dark ages

I dunno, in it's place, some inspiration is a good thing.

30yrs ago I was sat around scratching my arse wasting my school holidays away. Now I'm a 44yo stressed Dad of a toddler trying vainly to learn the guitar whenever I can squeeze a few hours practice into a week.

I genuinely wish someone had inspired me to a guitar up and play one in my youth.

I reckon kids need to be inspired more and not just left to chase poke-whoever round the house.

There's plenty of sporting roles models in the Olympics to get kids interested.

I think you miss my point. It's fantastic that kids get out there and try these sports, but it just seems that the media make it sound like it's impossible for a kid to just say "yeah, well, sailing looked like a bit of a laugh and my Dad did it so I thought I'd give it a go". It's just made out that "young people" can't get involved in sport without being "inspired" by a "hero". I remember one fk awful radio interview with a kid at an athletics club where the fkwit interviewer was literally putting words in the kid's mouth...something along the lines of

"Yes, my older brother is a member here. He likes long jump but I really like running. Sometimes mum comes to watch us on her way home from work"

"Yes but did Jessica Ennis and the Brownlee brothers inspire you"?

Oh do fk off.
