I guys is it worth bothering with the Porsche warranty as looking into it there's seems to be lots of exclusions and I'm not sure what is covered.

It's the best warranty out there for Porsches and a bargain if you ask me compared to other supercar warranties. Very comprehensive. I've had several. 5 'absoluty' rating from me biggrin

Ok, just wondering as it seems to exclude wear and tear which is fair enough but also engine, gearbox and a few other things so i wasnt sure what was actually left to cover?

What policy are you looking at?

I've never seen one that said it excludes Engine / Gearbox.

Most stuff is covered, I've had more back than paid in most years.

I thought it was the proper one but my google skills might have led me astray (it might have been and american version).

Oops ive found it and reread it. http://porscheapproved.com.au/porsche-approved-war...

I misinterpreted the list thinking they were all excluded

Horses for courses on this one. I think for every person who says they make their money back by claiming on the Warranty, there's another who finds them expensive and unnecessary. In some ways it depends how comfortable you are with risk, and if you own a Porsche with a potentially problematic engine then I can see the warranty offers solid peace of mind. Otherwise £1000 per year goes a long way towards servicing/insuring/running one, and if you want you can run your own rainy day fund on the side to pay for major issues should they arise. That way the money stays yours and doesn't just line Porsche Finance's pockets!

My 10 cents.

My own view is that it is part of the cost of ownership unless you have vast fortune tucked away that unexpected motoring expenses are seen as trivial. Porsche Warranty every day of the week for me. Other option is to put the money away (never happens) for the "event" then come on PH forum and complain madly about Porsche or the like and see how long and boring the thread gets.......

Not necessarily true.

For example, you take out a warranty costing £1k. The OPC say keeps £500 of that and the 3rd party warranty provider takes the other £500. You make a warranty claim for £1300 of retail priced work. The OPC invoices the 3rd party warranty provider £400, the warranty provider is notionally down £100. You're both happy.

Of course that also very much simplifies how warranty companies price risk. It's not a simple money in vs money out equation (just as car insurers don't) as they also take into consideration such factors as covariance of risk with respect to the rest of their portfolio etc

I own a 996 turbo but I'm looking at upgrading to a 997 gen 2 cab. I read a thread over on 911uk where someone had said the pse valves had sieved and as it was classed as part of the exhaust system it wasn't covered by warranty which got me wondering.

I was giving those figures as an example, that's why I said 'for example' no one has a clue what the real figures are, but either way it's not the case that your gain is monotonically their loss as you've agreed. Both can be winners. Again it's not just about simple figures either (which you've ignored) it's about much more than that.

I'm not looking for an argument, I just don't like constantly hearing it repeated how taking out a warranty, on average, cannot be financially beneficial to you, it can be. Also remember, many insurance companies have been making massive losses on insurance policies, sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. As far as the Porsche warranty goes, it's as close to 'winning' for a premium sports car warranty buyer as I have seen, it's very keenly priced, and big things can and do go wrong with these cars.

It's car insurance that's the biggest scam. Your car has to get stolen just to get your money back these days.

This is my view too.

OPC is very restrictive with mods too ie not allowed. It's like you don't own the car. I'm a serial tweaker so it doesn't sit well with me. And I bought the car for me.

I've just ridden a coach and horses through my OPC warranty by fitting a superior full exhaust system amongst other things. But as stated here above it depends how comfy you are with risk. And if the OPC warranty scheme didn't make money, it wouldn't be offered. Simple.
