Our 65 plate Tiguan Match 177ps TDi DSG is developing a metallic rattle when idling , this is at 16k miles
Our Son” Blue32” says it is a possibility of early DMF failure , as he has heard similar sounds from his R32 before ditching the DMF.
Any VAG owners know of potential or reported early DMF failures ,in particular the TDi 177ps DSG engine /transmission combination , a google search does bring up some reports but nothing specific to a DSG version.

I see in general across the board the DMF is troublesome on all brands

Please keep this to the question I have asked ,I am not interested in a diatribe of opinion against VAG cars, We happen to like out choice of car so that is not the issue .
Thanks.

It's almost certainly the DMF but whether it's failing is a different matter. I've had DMF rattle from my Mk5 R32 since I bought it. It had 33k miles on it then and has 64.5k miles on it now. It's gotten no better or worse in that time. It's modified (including the DSG mapping) and has seem some spirited use...

If you do some searching around the web you'll see it's very common as in almost every VAG with the particular DMF, has some sort of rattle from it. I've read multiple posts where owners have replaced the DMF with a brand new one only for that to rattle as soon as the car is started after fitment. They's just a noisy design.

If you're really concerned, your Tiguan is still under warranty so take it back to VW and air those concerns.

Thanks
Already spoken to dealer , booking a check up , and no doubt will be told no problem ,but they will have on record that I raised the issue , the warranty WILL be extended after it runs out , learnt my lesson on the last car
Because my sons car has a "few" mods giving 500bhp , he ditched the DMF for a solid one , and TBH we cant tell the difference.

I'm certainly not a fan of the DMF. No car I've owned to date had or needed one and a couple of them were running decent power. If I did have to replace it, my first choice would be a single mass replacement but, I'm not sure how viable that is with the DSG gearbox, seeing as you couldn't have spring loaded friction discs.
