Yeah, that. I'd rather have our policing.

A few years back I was working for a Police and military training company out of Dubai and we had some decent contacts in Pakistan. There were the odd guys very keen to improve their skills and tactics but the majority didn't want any change in case it affected their ability to levy bribes. They openly told us. This was at the same time they were giving AKs to middle aged female teachers to try and stop the fundamentalists. My brain was boggled but it's a different world.

Where I live, in the Philippines, the new president has basically given people in general freedom to shoot suspected drug peddlers on sight. And it is happening, approx 600 dead in the 100 days since Duterte got voted in.

No evidence required, just shoot them and that is it.

Last I heard he had about a million quid price on his head by drug lords.

Seems a popular policy with the public. I read that hundreds more had given themselves up to stop them being executed by the police and public. Again as read, you may know different, but drugs seem to have really blighted that area hence the reaction to this.

I am sure some who have been killed were innocent as it does seem there is no comeback at all.

Drugs are a huge problem here, and so many high powered people are involved, from the judges, cops, military, government, so many people have their finger in the pie..... And Duterte is naming them publicly now.

I have a feeling there will be a bloodbath before anything improves markedly. And the eyes of the world are upon this place now.

A lot of Pakistan's best security/police types end up staying in the Gulf. During the 1990s, "services rendered" to Arab monarchs by seconded Pakistani special forces helped to keep Pakistan's national budget somewhere close to balanced.

Mothersruin did you ever meet any of them?

I remember that series - some "great" quotes/comments. E.g. in hot room after an initial beating. "look he's sweating, that shows he's guilty, he wouldn't sweat if he was innocent". Am sure there was also something like "we must beat him even if he's innocent - just to be sure" or something like that.

No, well, not knowingly. Every other person in Dubai is either secret police or informing for the secret police. The main contract we had in the UAE was with the Prison Service so I didn't have much contact with the local plod.
