The Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) wants to levy fees of up to £50,000 - apparently to ensure public welfare at festivals by employing more health and safety inspectors.

The charges would apply to outdoor events with capacities of more than 6,000 and would start at £5,000.

Better make sure PistonFest is only 5,999 people then........

This is the thin end of the wedge, you will probably need a license for a BBQ soon as it is an 'Outdoor Event', school nativity play? It's a 'Festival' so that will be £5,000 for a license please.......

Labour's whole policy in government has been to regulate everything in sight-expanding the public payroll and controlling more and more of people's lives.

Until we take back this country things will only get worse.

Serious question, do you honestly think that is possible?

The way I see it(which may well be wrong) we have a government that pi55es money away in every direction and when they have no money in their pockets they sit down and dream up new ways of getting some in. Lets face it, this is what they do best, they have failed miserably at other minor issues like running the country.
At no point do they consider cutting down on wastage, just finding ways of getting more of it. This is now out of control and to make matters worse they will more than likely get in again to dish out more of the same.
Hopefully I will be proved wrong.

Not for a long time-Until the great mass of people in this country realise that simply taxing and spending vast sums of money do not automatically improve the public services they use.

Not this election-perhaps the election after.

This is very true, the Blandford Steam Fair, not everyones cup of tea, is underthreat from the maddness that is health and safety. The thing is to show how machines worked so they bring saw mills and rock crushers and show them working. H&S want all these to be fitted with the safety gear they use now gaurds cut outs etc, public behind sheilds so no sawdust can be get in eyes, and the horses fenced off to stop people stroking them in case one bites. This is all done for charity and has thousands of visitors and how many are injured, correct none.

Mad control freaks in charge are killing this country.

I suppose if you dream up a load of restrictions and then employ people to enforce them it must create a lot of employment.
If you just look at controlled parking and all the jobs it creates, the traffic wardens, the road markings, fine payment, the meters, the tickets, the plastic bags etc etc. All those extra jobs have been created, the public pay for them in extra taxes and the government end up with the profit to pi55 away on inventing more similar "investments".

Come election time there are less people unemployed, looks better on paper and a good figure to quote when the state of the country is questioned.

Totally agree. But most people have swallowed the 'schools and hospitals' soundbyte. When someone dares to suggest 'Why can't you lower taxes?' they quickly reply 'Which hospital do you want to shut?'.
The Labour spin/PR/soundbyte machine is far faster than the electorate or the Opposition, unfortunately. But then, it's had a lot of practice...

You could look at it like that. You could also view it as lots of unnecessary, highly paid jobs for people who have no skills, nothing to offer and who would, in any other country, be unemployable, all funded by the increasingly beleagured hard-working, well qualified ambitious entrepreneur. It is all about social engineering and guaranteeing votes by making thousands dependent on the Government.

So it's the consultancy phase, it still shows how the evil buggers think. Socialism should be a capital offence. The nanny state thinks it knows better than the citizens it is supposed to be the servant of. By manipulating spin this government has got away with more wrongdoing than any British government in history.

Have you read the document?

This kind of thing is just everyday business for government departments and has little to do with party politics. The whole point of consolations are to gather opinions from all the interested parties before changes in legislation are made.

H&S concerns and regulations have already started to take effect. The knowl hill steam rally has been cancelled this year and for the forseeable future due to the cost of meeting H&S reg's. The cost of hosting this sort of event is getting out of hand.

The netley marsh steam fair was charged £20,000 last year to have a few policeman controll the traffic. 2 policeman were present for 3 days. And we the tax payers pay their wages anyhow.

It used to be the case you could just turn up and show your vehicles at these shows now you must prebook to keep the insurance companies happy.

Jag is looking through his telescope, but it is trained on the correct horizon. He's simply seeing a future that will inevitabley arrive. Perhaps even in our lifetime.

...the answer to the question is; it 'will' be possible, because that will be the nature of things when the moment and the event coincide.

I'm not sure I believe things are 'inevitable' Dr Strangelove- You have to fight for what you believe not wait for it to inevitable fall into your lap.

In a similar sense, for those who are religous, God helps those who help themselves.

like the consultation done on allowing/disallowing dark visors on motorcycle helmets - majority wanted to allow but they disallowed as it didn't fit in with their wishes/plans etc.

You're avin' a larf.

I think you'll find the whole point of a consultation is to say "we had a consultation" and then go ahead with whatever they had planned anyway. E.g. the had a consultation as to whether or not to install speed bumps on my father's road - nobody down the road wanted speed bumps (a previous consultation had already proven this!) but they went ahead anyway.

We were asked if we wanted controlled parking in our area. Obviously everybody wanted to pay to park outside their own houses, it makes perfect sense doesn't it
Nobody wanted it, the majority took the trouble of making their feelings known - we now pay to park regardless.
