My Son is in the Army and his insurance runs out on the 14th of this month. He's due to deploy to Iraq on a six month op at the end of this month so he will SORN his car. He's just put 12 months tax on it and will claim 11 months back but in a quandary about the insurance, any good advice on cheapest way to do it please?

He's spoken to his present insurer and the guy on the phone said the cheapest way to do it would be to re new, then cancel new policy before 14 days and he would get all his money back. This can't be right as basically he would be getting two weeks free insurance, any advice?

Depending on how / where the car is stored this is where most specialist insurers would tend to suggest a laid up / SORN policy if the car is physically not being used?

That's how I've insured my Focus RS for the last few years, since I stopped using it / stored it away, and it covers the car as normal but excludes road use - even on a heavily modified car I've only paid circa £130 the last few years. Most of those sort of policies also work on the basis that if you wish to put the car back on the road during the 12 month insurance period, you contact them when required, add the road requirement and just pay the outstanding difference to do so.

This must happen a lot with service personnel being away for ages, can't he get some answers in camp? If the car is stored in camp,it's under armed guard.I`m sure you will find an insurer to cover it for non road risks while its SORNED.
My classic was insured while in bits/storage.

Don't think the SORN bit is going to be a problem. Main issue is his present road insurance runs out on the 14th Aug and he won't deploy until the end of this month and still needs his car, so he's trying to find the cheapest way to insure it for a little over two weeks.

Sign up for the Defence Discount Service, then search through the various insurers for the best quote.

https://www.defencediscountservice.co.uk

There are insurers listed on there who understand the specific product needs and requirements for service personnel...plus you get a whole load of discounts for most high street stores and online.
