I'm looking at taking my Spyder to Italy (Tuscany) via route napoleon next week.

I have done it before in a boxster S and then a 360 spider, but I wondered if anyone has opinions on missing out a bit with the A51?

I would gladly do the whole N85 again, but I have a wife who finds certain bits of road trips a bit too much, so I'm flying her in to Lyon.

I will drive from London to there and stay in Grenoble on the first day to knock out 9hours of driving for her....

PM me and I'll gladly discuss my route etc if you like.

Roads have been brilliant in the Spyder - best car I've done the trip in. I am not sure there are many better/more fun cars to do it in, on balance. The mix of abilities and attributes is close to perfection.

The car is not too wide, extremely nimble and very much confidence inspiring. It sounds *incredible* with the exhaust reverberating off the rock faces and tunnels. I do not know how Porsche got away with this exhaust (but then I don't know what the regs actually are for exhausts...). It's the first Porsche I've had that I've not craved a bit more from the sound.

The so called long gearing feels great on these roads, and you blip down to first for the hair-pins. 1st, 2nd and 3rd, with occasional 4th gear on the sweeping bends are all that really are needed for the alpine roads. Much enjoyment can be had without ending up at silly speeds. Despite it being August, the roads are not full of traffic (though Route Napoleon was fairly busy - but that's not the best bit anyway...).

I am not missing the sound of a Ferrari V8 on this trip, and I thought I might.

I would consider trucking the car in to Lyon and flying in some time when I don't fancy the drive from London to Grenoble (10h) on the autoroutes, or take longer and do it on the N roads, as the autoroutes are obviously fast but feel like a waste of miles on the car!

You not selling the Spyder then? Surely keep it if you can!

Cool - will PM you.

I came perilously close to selling but as soon as it looked to be sold I regretted it terribly, and held on to it.
I'm now loving it more than ever, I can totally see that it's special.

Time spent away from the Spyder thread on here also helped!

Besides, I can get a baby seat and my wife can take the bus, right?

I concur. I was considering selling the 360 Spider and Boxster and getting in to a 458 spider, but I've changed my mind. I may get a 458 later, but can't see myself selling the 981 Spyder - it's just too great a car! Talk soon.
