Folks,

decided to break my old Mondeo rather than scrap it in due to the value of metal these days.
Based in NI, posted an ad on Gumtree detailing whats available on the car (car is currently complete). I have been approached by a couple of people in the greater London area requesting various ancillaries. I have made it clear that I want payments via PayPal, to which they seem genuinely happy to do.. Not into swindling anyone, I just want a fair price for some mechanically sound parts and the minimum hassle in getting paid/sending to buyer. Or am I living in cloud cuckoo land? Is PayPal the best medium to to this? Local breakers largely aren't interested (2006 Mondeo diesel). Thanks

What if they say it's faulty/broken and you get their old one sent to you?

Paypal is basically a trust based system. OP paypal will suit the buyers better than sending you the money by bank transfer as they will have some comeback.

Presumably the sums involved aren't life changing.

sums aren't life changing (<£100) and I'm well versed in using PayPal, just inquiring if its the right method for what I'm doing

All that jazz

See if they are still genuinely happy when you tell them you want the funds by bank transfer. Payment methods other than bank transfers and cash in your hand are asking for trouble on Gumtree. If they really want the stuff they'll do a bank transfer, that way there's no comeback on you but a lot of trust on their end. You're setting yourself up for a whole pile of potential grief in allowing Paypal imho.

Okeydokey, and that's what I was answering. From the buyers' perspective yes, definitely. From yours 50/50.

ok, not considered a wire transfer but having done a little research it seems to be the most secure about. Thanks Jazz

I'd want to do bank transfer and if a buyer was wary of this then consider PayPal.

If it's a compromised Paypal account then you lose your stuff and your money and there's nothing you can do about it. Gumtree is a favourite place for scammers to go with their hacked Paypal accounts and as the OP has already said they're more than willing to pay some complete stranger by Paypal it would already be ringing alarm bells for me.

Have you looked to see if the items they want from you are available on Ebay? Think about it...

Oh I have done that already, which raised my concern. So either he is on the scam or simply looking for the same part for less than he can pay locally

You're still relying on Paypal to side with you, rather than the buyer. I wouldn't want to risk it.

I use paypal a lot I break mx5 regular so 50% of my parts sold are paid via paypal. Ive only had one issue with a coil pack being sent to france guy said he never received it despite tracking info confirming it did loads of messages back and for and decided for the cost of £30 I refund the money just so I didn't have to deal with him. From that I now only sell to the uk and do check the profiles of the buyers if using facebook too see if they have any mutual friends etc.

On gumtree though I don't accept paypal cash only but don't sell much on there anyway.
