Greetings Pork owners, I'm posting this on behalf of a good mate who finds himself in the fortunate position of having a spare 40k that's burning a hole in his pocket and he's decided it's about time he bought something he's always wanted... A Porsche... He's mid forties and kids are grown up so a toy is definitely on the cards (It won't be a daily, like me he works offshore). Anyway, I've tried to talk him out of it, explained how much better a TVR is, how unreliable a Porsche is, and how all his mates will think he's driving the wife's new car. But he won't listen...

Anyhoo, this is a purely dosh based question, he thinks he wants a Cayman, but I've suggested that a 40k 911 will depreciate far less over say three years than a 40k Cayman. I have no idea whether that's true, but I figure you guys will have informed opinions (know what your talking about, unlike me). We've discussed practicality, space, if it's going to be a weekend toy or likely to be used for (example) European tours, etc. The 'which is the better drivers car' question isn't overly relevant here, its not likely to be driven anywhere near its limits, although he does fancy trying track days... I've told him that if you're a Porsche owner then track days are a great opportunity for seeing what TVR's look like when they go past you, but I don't think he was listening biggrin

So, which way to go?

TIA Chilli

It depends which Cayman or 911 he wants to spend £40k on. You can pick up a 987 Cayman R for £40k and you can pick up a 981 Cayman S for £40k for example. If he wants to keep it, would make sense to get something that will hold better from a depreciation perspective i.e. Cayman R. If I was your mate, I'd test drive and see which he preferred as Porsche make quite a few variants. But, you're looking at 987.2 or 981.1 on Caymans or 996.1, 996.2, 997.1 and a few 997.2 cars. Aesthetics come into it as well, I'm not a fan of the fried egg style headlights on a 996, he may love them.

He really needs to drive both a 911 and a Cayman as they are quite different.

"great money now"are you joking, good money 2 years ago, now silly money, like the TVR Saggy hehe.........
911 all the way, Cayman will drop like a stone unless he can get a special one.

I tipped them for the last two years. Even now in there 30k -40k still good value for a lot of car.

They will follow the 930 within five years.

997.2 would be my suggestion. They haven't dropped much over the last 3-4 years.

I've had a few 911s and now have a Cayman R. As others have said above, they really are very different indeed. I love the Cayman, but it drives nothing like a 911

hehe

Thanks for all the input guys, exactly what we were looking for smile My mate is signing up so I expect him to be on here soon asking more questions....

Have to say I came sooo close to buying a 996tt about 3 or 4 years ago, there were many relativtely low mileage cars in the classifieds for well under 30k, but I was in the process of house purchase and just couldn't justify it... kicking myself now....

Thanks again for the valuable advice, very much appreciated...

I'd go for a 996 911 Turbo, proper all round supercar, ballistic speed and super all rounder. Cayman is ok, had an S for a couple of months and it was a good sports car, but doesn't compare to a 911 Turbo, which is a 190mph supercar! . 40k will get him a decent one, buy now and enjoy!

Absolutely.

I had my mid life crisis in an Aston, so bought a 981 Cayman.

40k will just maybe nudge a decent 997.2 but you might end up with less than perfect spec at that price point. Cayman R is a fairly sensible buy although they are incredibly spec and mileage sensitive come resale. 996 turbo I'm not that keen on. They are quick but not pretty. Running costs can be interesting too I hear.

981 is still depreciating but won't be too bad and possibly even offset the potential running costs of an older car by buying a 2/3 year old 981 with no miles. There are some decent 987.2s come up now and again round the 30k mark. They don't really depreciate but again very spec sensitive.

996 turbo, will hold up well.
Running cost some can be high ,bills wise buy the right car you are on a winner. As with any car you drive, you pay. Some things cost more than others.
Service big one, for my car around £600.

Love caymans but every time I see a 997.2 i just think what a beautiful car, don't think you can go wrong with either!
But at £40 k you will get more for your money with a Cayman, buy a 987.2s for £30k tweak the engine for 360hp and add some nice coil overs job done! Ask mrD for advice in that department as he has done his 987 spyder( engine tune that is)

They drive so differently it's largely personal choice, so test drive both and then make a call.

However, I would say is that if he's set his heart on a 911, it's better to buy one straight off the bat rather than be swayed elsewhere as he'll probably ending buying twice if he is!

Yes, but 911 drivers are better 'cos they can handle the extra challenges the car throws at them.

That makes the 911 the macho choice for the now grown up boy who dreamed wet dreams about the poster car on his bedroom wall.

OOOooooo... ain't I bhy tonight. Just can't stand the 911 squashed Beetle look, arse hanging out it's trousers...
