What's your most horrific public interaction?

For me it was being buttonholed by a "right on" animal rights activist in Cheltenham in the late 80's

He invited me to sign a petition to "sort out" man's inhumanity to animals, and I replied that I would like to first sort out man's inhumanity to man. What followed was the worst personal verbal abuse I have ever been subjected to in my life. I had to take a shower when I home to wash the bile-laced spittle off me.

So, what about you?

I don't think I've ever had anything really horrific happen, but a couple of years ago a female work colleague offered to drop me off outside the supermarket at lunchtime so I could get a sandwich as she was on her way home.

I got out of her car right outside the entrance, and as I walked away from the car she wound the window down and screamed as loudly as she could "You fking sick bd, it's my baby too and I want to keep it! I'm not getting rid of it just because you don't want it".

The place was packed and I was given the most dirty looks of all dirty looks by all the women present, and a couple of them even started shouting obscenities at me telling me I was 'scum' and 'should be ashamed' etc.

There was absolutely nothing I could do but just keep my head down and quickly walk past them all.

Yeah, it was fairly bad!

Wait...so that's her idea of a joke?

I'd have spray-painted something on her car the following day if she'd done that to me.

Yes.

She totally got me with it.

We all used to wind each other up and prank each other at work, but that was pretty much the worst!

Crazy (much younger) ex of mine... We were at Alton towers and just as a ride started she went down on me and screamed "no dad not here!"
I saw the security guy come running but the ride had started to move and he was slow!
I must have turned the colour if a tomato!

laugh It's funny to read but I'd be livid. Which is the point I guess. That sounds like the brutal "banter" that some of my aquaintences unleashed on each other when at uni- it escalated to pretty much criminal damage and they talk about it like it was the good old days!

Have never been abused in the street but I do remember feeling a bit of a tt when I was a late teenager- walked into a shopping centre with my cheap tinny headphones blaring something obnoxious like RATM and with a bit of a strut on.

Some old guy looking at a shop window turns around and starts looking nowhere in particular. I think nothing of it. I turn a corner and theres about four or five people standing still, but not next to shop windows- they look like they've just stopped where they were walking. confused

I'm thinking about how odd this is as I turn into the main section of the shopping centre only to find that everyone, like about fifty plus people are all standing as though someone just hit their "off buttons". confused

I'm frankly a bit freaked out by this point. It's like the Day the Earth stood Still or a Dr Who episode. What's worse is that some are giving me dirty looks. I mouth a stroppy teenage "What!?" to one and get a shake of the head from another.

I take out my headphones and the guy breaks eye contact. So do a few others who were looking at me, but others are shaking their head or looking at each other in some knowing way and I can feel people staring at me. Wierdest, wierdest thing in the world and really unnerving. I now just want to get out of here.

I'm now positively speed-walking into a silent shopping centre full of zombies with my head down trying not to meet the glances I'm attracting everywhere, my headphones blaring tinny, indignant youthful rage from my neck as I speed past.

I actually sort of want to stop (amazing how herd mentality works), but get the feeling that peer pressure won't let me off that easily and I've somehow given myself away as a Normal in the land of fking nutters. I figure I'll just style it out, pull back my shoulders and try to enact a more nonchalant strut. I'm not the weird one here!

Just when I get to about the centre of the group, a voice comes over the tannoy-

I think that's bloody hilarious , good girl. Sort of half expecting a brightly coloured noisy bird but why would you attack her car over a joke ? Why would you attack anyones car ?

I once had a traffic warden say to me venomously "move on now, you can't park here"

Really upset me, I was only on the zig zag part minding my own business, jobsworth.

A work mate of mine in our youth left me on the top deck of a bus to get off at his stop and as he went down the stairs to get off shouted back: "Oh yes, don't forget that if Laura wants her knickers back I'll drop them back to you later." 'Puce' might adequately describe my facial hue...

Many years ago, my wife had gone up town with our 2 year old and I arranged to meet her for lunch in one of those "old lady" type tea rooms.

When I got there, she was with 2 of her friends, one had a similar aged daughter and the other looked about 11 months pregnant.

When I arrived, my little girl started on the "dad dad dad" thing and the friends little girl started the same. Both girls looked just like their mothers i.e very different.

The preggers friend got up, kissed me, called me darling and set all the old biddies off with loads of whispering & tutting as they obviously thought what a complete bd I was.

About 20 or so years ago outside Debenhams near Picadilly in Manchester I got accosted by a "Socialist Worker" seller. "Socialist Worker, mate" he cries.

"I had no idea socialists did any work" was my ever so witty riposte.

This did not go down well - he went a bit postal. "Oh haha! Mister Funny Fascist, are we?" and he starts prancing around me, goose stepping and doing Hitler salutes.

So I hit him.

I was verbally abused in the street only a few weeks ago, by someone collecting for a charity. Walking from one pub to another on a Saturday night, she stands in front of me rattling the collecting tin (which I didn't think they were supposed to do) so I mumbled something about having no change and carried on walking. As I walked away she started shouting "go on, carry on walking past" which rapidly descended into "no wonder you're walking on your own on a Saturday night" until I got out of earshot.

I don't think I know her, I've no idea what charity she was collecting for, nor what prompted the diatribe or why it turned personal. Of course, a bit later I thought of all the witty things I could have said in return, or I could have gone back, found out what charity it was and made a stink about it, but I'd had a drink or two and suspect she'd had even more than me.

Years and years ago, I had a Plaid Cymru bloke try to sell me some paper in the street in Machynlleth (sp?).

I rather apologetically told him I was an English tourist and he went nuts and started trying to shove me about a bit. At which point a policeman walked past and said something like "Now, now Jones, don't start that nonsense again", and he retreated back to his little stall looking sheepish.

As I was only half awake, it being about 9am, this was all a bit odd.
