Hi, just wondering if anyone can give me a bit of inspiration please!?

I am currently in full-time employment and I'm looking to get out of my current job.

I also rent a small unit, which is split into two rooms. A front office and a back room which I use as a studio (nothing that makes a living but it does cover around half the rent, per month). I'm trying to think of ideas as to what I can do with the front office to actually earn a living. I'm not expecting an easy buck. I'm willing to put the hours in, but it would be nice to not work nights anymore! I don't have a great deal in the way of savings, but I have a fairly decent income and I do have disposable cash each month, say £500-£600, at a push, that could be used to set something up. I'd be willing to stay in my current job as long as necessary to fund it.

I have had the idea of turning taxi driver, and opening the office during the day as a taxi office. Obviously with a few other drivers and not just me! The unit is located on a street that is very busy during the day with a busy doctors surgery within spitting distance (literally). I do know that this is a cut throat business, though. Maybe it's a ridiculous idea!

Any ideas are welcome! Good and bad, but the best get's a jolly good drink the next time you are passing smile

Thanks for reading folks!

Operators licence and planning permission are your starter for ten.

If you can get those then you need comms, drivers & cars and some business. Simples!

However...if it's not an industry you have any insight in to then it may be a challenge.

What are you good at or enjoy?

Yeah, truth be told I've no insight into this type of business at all, and I'm not naive in thinking it's as easy as giving people a lift! The actual office overheads are pretty low though, with the studio subsidising the rent (bands hire it to rehearse). I'm probably good at a couple of things. Driving, as I do it pretty much all day long with my current job and I know the area like I'm a sat-nav (hence the taxi idea), and music, but there isn't enough scope around here to make that pay, sadly.

Depending on the size you could rent the front office to a small business. Or four freelancers/start-ups/people who just need a desk sometimes, it's a growing market.

Then sell the window space to a company to advertise on (but speak to the council). If it's next to a doctors a taxi company might be good for it.

Two incomes and zero hours. Then you can think about what you need/want to do yourself.

Thanks for your reply...Should have mentioned that my tenancy agreement doesn't allow me to sub-let the office space. I had thought of that but then I read the small print :/

Microbrewery! Start really really small, sell to mates and the bands that rehearse there. Then scale it up.

Use the office to run it and with some selling from it, sort of trade counter /screwfix style

Any coffee shops in your local area? If not then set up a small cafe, You could then have the bands play to the customers. This would give the bands exposure and you'd be able to charge them for the advertising.

Could you set yourself up as a promoter for the better bands? I'm not sure how the music industry works these days but there must still be a need for managers even if it's just to find venues for a pub band.

Sweet shop.

Toffees for the old dears. Lots of passing diabetics too I'd have thought

Thanks everyone for the ideas. Certainly plenty to go on. I've rented the unit for over 2 years now, but I've just been too busy with the 'proper job' to do anything else with it. I think I've been missing a trick really with all the passing trade!

What else is on the street? I can't think of any time I've gone to the doctors and thought about calling in somewhere else (except a chemist). Coffee maybe at a push but I'd bet most people would want to get in/get out.

Not saying you should discount it, just think about what people could need when being in that area, or what else is around if you are looking to benefit from the footfall.

Butchers? pop up shop type sales?

There's not a great deal around. Next door is a bathroom sales office, and there rest of the units along our row are used for storage.

Any artists in the area?

Offer it as a gallery space for artists to exhibit their work.. have it on a fortnightly/monthly rotation.

Thought of that before, think there are a few competitors to the gallery idea in more affluent parts of town, though.

As a way of getting ideas, I occasionally look at the top growing franchises in America (just out of interest) to see what might come over here and be successful. I mean to do yourself, not take a franchise...
