Are you confident it's 12v?

My Garmin needs a 5v feed. I used the original incar charger coupled to a car cig lighter wired to 12v from the fusebox. The incar charger bit does the 12-5v conversion. All hidden neatly behind the dash with a single wire exposed for the nav unit.

Thanks

That's what I was concerned about. I'll buy a cig lighter and use that, a much more sensible idea.thumbup

ETA, I can conceal one of these quite easily.

I had a concealed 12V- USB supply on the Pan Euro which worked fine with my old Nuvi 255; when I got the new Nuvi (2548?) it has live traffic and needs the special Garmin power lead/charger rolleyes so I have to plug the car charger into the cig lighter socket in the glovebox (Pans have gloveboxes biggrin).
One of these days I'll buy a spare of the dedicated charger and conceal it but it works for now.
Rumour has it that there's some circuitry built-in to the USB plug that fits in the Nuvi socket to tell it that the correct charger is connected - it's not in the charger, there's only a 2-core cable and USB doesn't do data handshake over the supply lines.

Only a basic Nuvi so no traffic info.

£2.99 worth of socket hidden in the spectacles holder and all is well. smile

That's what I have used the last few cars, with a fuse inline.

It's in a fused circuit so no need for an inline jobbie.

I also have the Satnav end of the lead coming up through one of the windscreen heater vents,

I can feed it back down when not in use pull out the slack and plug it in when required.

But, unless you are popping the vent, or taking the crash panel out, it might be difficult in some cars.
