Insurance Car Park Question
Discussion
Not sure if this is the right section. I am renewing my car insurance, I normally do this though compare the market (heck I use the 2 for 1 cinema a lot). I have got to the part about where the car is parked. Since I got the car it was parked on my parents drive but I have moved now and it is in an ungated residential carpark, but there is no residential car park option only:
Locked Garage
Unlocked Garage
Drive
Street Outside Home
Street Away From Home
Locked Compound
Public Carpark
Work Carpark
Private Property
I am not sure which most fits an ungated residential carpark and it seems odd there isn't just a residential car park option :/
EDIT: For me it is between public car park and private property, I am not sure which though.

This.
Then phone the insurer to confirm but do not buy over the phone if you want your cinema tickets.
Get clarification then complete purchase via meerkats.
You can complete the puchase on the phone and still get the tickets you just give them the reference code on the website. Then phone the insurer to confirm but do not buy over the phone if you want your cinema tickets.

Thanks, I will go with public and do that

I'd go for public car park as technically it is with it being ungated.
Residents parking is private property, regardless of it being ungated. The public have access, but it is private property. OP, if a crack appeared in the car park, who would have to fix it, the council or the residents? There's your answer.
That is the problem with the "tick box" approach!
I have 2 allocated spaces in a parking area that are marked on my house deeds, so I answer Private Parking - even though sometimes I can't use "my" spaces because some simpleton has parked in them!
One of the joys of living near buy-to-let properties - the tenants don't care (and to be fair don't get to see the deeds), the letting agents don't know and don't care, the owners couldn't give a monkeys so long as the rent gets paid.........!

I'm just wondering whether this is fact or supposition? And in which cases the street is cheaper and how you know this? Just curious.

In some cases, 'street' is cheaper than 'drive' because any would be thief cannot so easily tell the address where the keys are hanging near the front door thus reducing the likelihood of theft.

We have a garage and a drive but have four vehicles, so two are parked on the "street" - except the street is a section of parking which fits 8 vehicles at the end of a cul-de-sac and is used by all residents. Our classic resides in the garage and our campervan on the drive, so when I renewed my car insurance I changed it from drive to street and it actually knocked £3 off the price (Golf GTI). speedking31 said:

It's true, but only on selected cars in selected areas. Advanced computer modelling enabled insurers to drill right down for certain vehicles that are theft attractive but difficult to steal without the keys. If you have one of those and live in a quiet street where the risk of being hit whilst parked on the street is low, it can be cheaper to keep the vehicle on the street.speedking31 said:

Also, you eliminate the risk of claiming for damaging the vehicle getting it in and out of the garage, not uncommon with large 4x4s.
But for 95% of risks, it's cheaper on a driveway or in a garage.
In the interests of research for our next car I've just done a search via one of the usual suspects, just altering the car location and no other details - surprisingly sensitive, even in a tucked away low risk postcode in Surrey...
Garaged - £350
Driveway - £322
Road - £319
residential parking - £316
My current S8 is garaged, and declared as such, but makes me wonder how much it's costing me to keep it secure behind a 4 point locked garage door with a garage defender bolted to the floor outside as well.....it's only kept in there religiously as the same insurer who quoted the above was my provider when the wing mirrors were chiseled off shortly after purchase!

That is awesome, £31 pa cheaper to park in the road!
